Compensation: $17.50 - $19.00, depending on experience
The Role
Devil Mountain Wholesale Nursery is seeking dependable Canner I team members to support nursery production by shifting plant material into larger containers, including cans and boxes up to 24 inches.
This role plays a critical part in plant development by ensuring plants are transplanted using proper canning techniques that support healthy root growth and long-term plant quality. Canner I team members typically work as part of a canning crew assigned to a canning machine or canning process and help maintain efficient production operations.
Success in this role requires attention to detail, care in plant handling, the ability to follow established procedures, and a commitment to maintaining plant quality throughout the transplanting process.
What You’ll Do
- Shift plant material into larger containers, including cans and boxes up to 24 inches
- Follow proper canning techniques to support healthy plant growth and root development
- Identify plant material and ensure plant quality standards are maintained during transplanting
- Work as part of a canning crew assigned to a canning machine or canning process
- Handle plant material carefully to protect plant health and structural integrity
- Place finished plants in designated nursery areas to support organization and plant care
- Maintain nursery cleanliness and safe working conditions within assigned production areas
- Ensure plants are watered as needed and kept free of weeds
- Utilize and maintain required PPE and company equipment
- Assist other nursery departments and support general nursery operations as needed
What You Bring
Required
- Ability to identify plant material and recognize plant quality standards
- Ability to follow direction and work effectively within a team environment
- Ability to handle plants carefully while maintaining plant quality during transplanting
- Ability to communicate effectively with Crew Leaders and other nursery staff
Preferred
- Experience working in a nursery, landscape, or agricultural environment
- Experience working with canning equipment or transplanting plants
Work Environment & Expectations
This is a physically demanding outdoor production role performed in active nursery environments.
Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, active equipment and vehicle traffic, and exposure to dust, plant material, fertilizers, moisture, and seasonal allergens. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as applicable.
Physical requirements include:
Extensive walking throughout the nursery during the workday
- Frequent bending, twisting, turning, squatting, kneeling, and crouching
- Working on uneven surfaces including dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas
- Use of hands and fingers for grasping and moving plant material
- Lifting up to 50 lbs independently (approximately 75% of the time)
- Participating in team lifts up to 100 lbs (approximately 25% of the time)
