Job Description

The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) include the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park and La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park. They operate under the collective vision to inspire wonder, discovery, and responsibility for our natural and cultural worlds. The museums hold one of the world’s most extensive and valuable collections of natural and cultural history—more than 35 million objects—used for groundbreaking scientific and historical research, and community engagement. From NHM’s opening in 1913 as the very first museum in Los Angeles, the organization has entered an exciting new era of transformation with building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach and impactful audience engagement.

NHMLAC’s values—adventurous, inclusive, authentic, and intentional—guide our work and visitor experience, committing us to foster a welcoming, safe and respectful workplace environment where innovation and collaboration thrive and every team member can contribute their unique perspectives to advance our mission. NHMLAC seeks candidates who are aligned with our values and priorities, and are passionate about connecting science with the vibrant and diverse communities we serve throughout Los Angeles.

The NHMLAC is seeking a Mobile Museum Tech. and Driver for our Education & Programs department. The Mobile Museum Tech. and Driver is responsible for the transportation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of Mobile Museum vehicles and exhibition spaces, as well as the technical design and build of associated program materials.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Drives semi-tractor trailers to scheduled programs at school sites and community event locations, and conducts all setup and breakdown of associated programs and exhibition needs.

  • Assists in the completion of all routine vehicle inspections and maintenance as required by state and local regulations. Maintains necessary records for vehicle compliance. Keeps up to date on current regulatory requirements for Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) vehicles and Class “A” licensed drivers.

  • Meets medical and regulatory standards to operate Class “A” vehicles, as well as maintains associated documentation.

  • Assists in pre-residency site-checks at all school, community events, or any other trailer parking locations as needed, to confirm tractor-trailer parking and accessibility. Confirms school site access, delivery needs, and truck routes with school personnel and appropriate Museum staff.
  • Serves as museum representative. Carries oneself with the demeanor, decorum, and professionalism needed for the position and its interaction with others as a representative of the team and NHMLAC to the public.
  • Organizes the procurement of equipment and materials necessary for vehicle function. Oversight of equipment and material storage and disposal in compliance with NHMLAC and product manufacturer protocols.

This position has the following requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
  • A valid Class “C” California Driver’s License. Experience hauling semi-tractor trailers with both local delivery and city driving experience are a plus.
  • Clean driving record and clearance through the Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice Program. No additional endorsements (e.g., hazardous materials) are required. No DUI convictions within the past ten years nor during employment at the Museum.
  • Must successfully complete a Clearinghouse Query through the Department of Transportation, and pass the employer's Drug and Alcohol test.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • An understanding of carpentry, welding, paint, electrical, and HVAC trade skills preferred.
