The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading the maintenance team to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all plant equipment and facilities. This role oversees daily maintenance activities, including preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance, while strictly adhering to food safety regulations (GMPs, HACCP, SQF) and worker safety standards (OSHA). The ideal candidate will minimize equipment downtime, optimize production efficiency, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.


Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Direct, train, schedule, and evaluate a team of maintenance mechanics and technicians across [insert number, e.g., three] shifts.
  • Work Order Management: Assign and monitor daily maintenance tasks, ensuring work orders are completed safely, correctly, and on time.
  • Preventive Maintenance (PM): Execute and optimize the plant’s PM program for all processing, packaging, and facility equipment to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Food Safety Compliance: Ensure all maintenance work complies with strict food processing standards, including USDA, FDA, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and sanitation protocols.
  • Troubleshooting: Lead complex troubleshooting efforts for mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, including PLCs, conveyors, mixers, ovens, and refrigeration units.
  • Inventory Control: Assist in managing the spare parts inventory, ensuring critical components are stocked while controlling departmental costs.
  • Vendor Coordination: Coordinate with external contractors and service providers for specialized repairs, equipment installations, and facility maintenance.
  • Safety Enforcement: Enforce Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, and all other safety programs to maintain a zero-incident work environment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify recurring equipment failures and collaborate with the operations team to implement long-term engineering solutions.


Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or lead capacity. Food processing or beverage industry experience is highly preferred.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Associate degree, technical certification, or vocational training in industrial maintenance, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems (up to 480V), mechanical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and ammonia refrigeration.
  • Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for tracking work orders and PMs.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and food safety standards (HACCP, SQF, BRC, or AIB).
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between technical staff and operations management.


Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs or ladders for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working in a high-speed manufacturing environment that may be loud, wet, and subject to extreme temperature fluctuations (both hot processing areas and cold storage/freezer environments).
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends, nights, and on-call shifts as required by production schedules and plant emergencies.
