Job Description

Job DescriptionCNC Lathe Machinist CNC Machinist

Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to set up, program, operate and maintain CNC turning and multi-axis machines to produce precision components to print. The role focuses on producing high-quality parts through effective G-code programming, tooling and fixture selection, speeds and feeds optimization, and rigorous inspection practices. The ideal candidate is experienced with a range of controls and machine types, proficient with CAD/CAM systems, and committed to continuous improvement and ISO9001-compliant processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up, program (G-code) and operate CNC turning centers and multi-axis machines to manufacture precision components to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Interpret blueprints and GD&T to determine machining requirements, tolerances and inspection methods.
  • Create, edit and optimize CNC programs for Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, Siemens, Mazak and Swiss-type lathes, including multi-axis turning, live tooling and sub-spindle operations.
  • Perform tool setup, offsets, fixture setup and tooling selection; calculate and optimize speeds and feeds for efficiency and tool life.
  • Execute turning, threading, boring, reaming and other machining operations; monitor cutting conditions and adjust parameters for optimal surface finish and dimensional control.
  • Use CAD/CAM software (Mastercam, GibbsCAM, SolidWorks) to generate toolpaths, post-process code and support continuous improvement of programs.
  • Conduct precision measurement and inspection using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators and other gauges; perform First Article Inspections and use SPC methods to monitor process stability.
  • Manage coolant systems, chip control and housekeeping; perform routine machine preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting to minimize downtime.
  • Perform deburring, finishing and final inspection to ensure parts meet quality standards and surface finish requirements.
  • Maintain accurate production records, job travelers and inspection documentation in accordance with ISO9001 and company procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality and production teams to resolve issues, implement process improvements and support new product introductions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical diploma or associate degree in machining or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience with turning centers and multi-axis machines; experience on Swiss-type lathes a plus.
  • Proven ability to write, edit and optimize G-code programs; familiarity with Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, Siemens and Mazak controls.
  • Experience with live tooling, sub-spindle operation, multi-axis turning and complex fixture setups.
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM systems such as Mastercam, GibbsCAM and SolidWorks for program creation and modification.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills and practical understanding of GD&T.
  • Competence in precision measurement and inspection techniques (micrometer, caliper, dial indicator) and experience performing First Article Inspection and SPC.
  • Good understanding of cutting tool geometry, speeds and feeds optimization, threading, boring and reaming.
  • Hands-on knowledge of coolant systems, chip management, deburring/finishing and preventive maintenance.
  • Experience machining a variety of materials including steel, aluminum, titanium and brass.
  • Working knowledge of ISO9001 quality systems and strong commitment to safety and quality standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, effective communication and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
