Job Description
Job Description
Commercial Controller
Location: Sacramento, CA or Reno, NV
Employment Type: Full-Time
Base Salary: $125,000–$150,000
Industry: Commercial Construction
The Opportunity
Elevate Studio + Partners is recruiting a Commercial Controller for a growing commercial construction firm with operations across Sacramento and Reno.
This leadership role will oversee the financial operations of four construction-related companies, including concrete tilt-up contractors, a steel erection and fabrication business, and a union concrete finishing subcontractor.
The Commercial Controller will serve as a financial partner to executive leadership, operations, and project teams. The role combines accounting leadership, construction finance, operational analysis, and strategic planning.
What You'll Be Doing
- Oversee accounting and financial operations across multiple companies and business units.
- Lead financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow management.
- Manage the month-end close process and maintain general ledger accuracy.
- Oversee job costing, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion reporting, and project profitability analysis.
- Partner with operations and project teams to improve billing, collections, and cash conversion.
- Identify financial and operational risks and develop practical mitigation strategies.
- Prepare and present financial reports, forecasts, and operating metrics to leadership.
- Strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and reporting processes.
- Support strategic planning, business growth, and operational decision-making.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and job-costing staff.
- Establish department goals, performance standards, and professional development plans.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
- Direct experience within commercial construction.
- Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Experience supporting multiple companies, divisions, or business units.
- Strong leadership, communication, analytical, and business-partnership skills.
- Ability to translate financial information into clear operational guidance.
- CPA designation is preferred but not required.
- Construction ERP experience is preferred.
Field and Office Engagement
This is an operationally engaged leadership position, not a strictly desk-based accounting role.
The Commercial Controller will spend time in the office and in the field to understand project operations, strengthen relationships with project teams, and remain connected to the business.
Regular travel between the Sacramento and Reno office locations will be required.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary of $125,000–$150,000
- Discretionary bonus program
- Vehicle allowance
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k)
- Flexible PTO
- Paid holidays
- Company-paid life insurance
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to take financial ownership of a growing commercial construction group and work directly with executive leadership, operations, and project teams.
The Commercial Controller will have meaningful influence over financial performance, reporting, internal controls, team development, and the continued growth of the commercial division.
