County Coordinator

Position Overview

This position is based in a scenic Central California community known for its Mediterranean climate, beautiful mountain ranges, rolling foothills, and picturesque valleys.

The County Wildfire Resilience Coordinator is a grant-funded, full-time, limited-term position (approximately 15 months) responsible for advancing countywide wildfire mitigation, preparedness, and resilience initiatives. This role supports the implementation of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and related strategic initiatives by coordinating efforts among local fire agencies, government departments, community organizations, and residents.

Working under general direction, the Coordinator serves as the central point of contact for wildfire prevention, risk reduction, and strategic planning activities. Responsibilities include maintaining and updating wildfire-related plans, developing policies that support defensible space and vegetation management, coordinating grant-funded initiatives, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal guidance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review, maintain, and assist with the implementation of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and Regional Priority Plan (RPP).
  • Coordinate with local agencies and community partners to support countywide wildfire resilience initiatives.
  • Maintain public access to wildfire planning documents through website updates and online resources.
  • Organize and facilitate public education webinars and community outreach events focused on wildfire preparedness.
  • Support implementation of countywide wildfire mitigation strategies in collaboration with local fire agencies and contracted partners.
  • Standardize data collection and reporting related to wildfire resilience activities and maintain GIS planning information.
  • Promote home hardening, defensible space compliance, and wildfire preparedness through community workshops and educational programs.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations, including outreach to vulnerable and underserved populations.
  • Prepare presentations and reports for county leadership and governing boards regarding project progress and program impacts.
  • Assist in developing and submitting collaborative grant applications and funding proposals.
  • Administer grant-funded projects, including tracking deliverables, budgets, reporting requirements, and project documentation.
  • Coordinate and participate in Board of Directors and stakeholder meetings.
  • Attend required virtual trainings, workshops, networking events, and monthly coordinator meetings.
  • Submit quarterly programmatic and financial reports and complete required grant closeout documentation.
  • Participate in regular meetings with grant administrators and funding agencies.
  • Develop training programs and exercises for Firewise communities and identify stakeholder training needs.
  • Maintain technology tools and software used to support program operations.
  • Track and report program performance metrics as required by funding agencies.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Wildfire mitigation strategies, community preparedness, and wildfire resilience planning.
  • Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) and Firewise USA principles.
  • Firewise community development, risk assessments, certification, and ongoing program maintenance.
  • Emergency management planning principles and strategic coordination.
  • Federal, state, regional, and local emergency management programs and resources.
  • Local government operations and public safety organizations.
  • GIS data management and wildfire planning resources.
  • Google Workspace and other standard office software applications.

Skills and Abilities

  • Analyze complex information and develop practical recommendations related to wildfire risk reduction.
  • Prepare professional reports, presentations, and policy recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively with government officials, community organizations, and the public.
  • Coordinate multiple projects and priorities simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Organize meetings, training sessions, and community outreach activities.
  • Work independently while exercising sound judgment and initiative.

Education & Experience

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities will be considered.

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Emergency Management, Disaster Planning, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.

Preferred Experience

  • Three years of progressively responsible administrative, project management, emergency management, or disaster preparedness experience.

OR

  • Two years of related experience combined with Community Wildfire Mitigation Specialist (CWMS) certification or equivalent National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) and/or FEMA training.

Working Conditions

  • Must be available to work on-site within the county at least one day per week.
  • Flexible schedule of up to 40 hours per week.
  • Occasional evening and weekend meetings, workshops, or public events may be required.
