Reports To: Head Painter / Refinish Technician
Classification: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

The Paint Helper supports the Paint Department in preparing vehicles and components for refinishing and assists the Head Painter / Refinish Technician throughout the repair process.

This is an entry-level position designed to develop the employee's knowledge and skills in automotive refinishing. The Paint Helper is responsible for surface preparation, masking, paint-related disassembly and reassembly, equipment cleaning, housekeeping, material handling, and other duties that support a safe, efficient, and high-quality refinish operation.

The Paint Helper is expected to follow direction, learn proper refinish procedures, maintain a clean work environment, and consistently demonstrate attention to detail.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSurface Preparation

  • Clean and prepare vehicle surfaces and components for refinishing.
  • Remove dirt, grease, wax, contaminants, rust, and other materials that may affect paint adhesion or finish quality.
  • Assist with sanding, scuffing, feathering, and other preparation processes.
  • Assist with minor body filler preparation and sanding as directed.
  • Maintain clean, properly prepared surfaces prior to refinishing.

Masking & Vehicle Protection

  • Properly mask vehicles, panels, glass, trim, wheels, openings, and adjacent surfaces.
  • Protect vehicle interiors, exterior components, and surrounding areas from dust, overspray, and contamination.
  • Remove masking materials and protective coverings when appropriate.

Disassembly & Reassembly

  • Assist with paint-related disassembly and reassembly.
  • Properly organize, label, and protect removed parts and hardware.
  • Report missing, damaged, or improperly fitting parts to the appropriate technician or supervisor.

Equipment & Shop Support

  • Clean and maintain spray guns, hoses, tools, and other paint equipment.
  • Maintain clean and organized paint preparation and work areas.
  • Assist with cleaning paint booths and surrounding areas.
  • Properly dispose of materials and waste according to company procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining adequate paint and shop supplies.

Production & Teamwork

  • Follow instructions from the Head Painter / Refinish Technician.
  • Complete assigned work within established production timelines.
  • Communicate issues that could affect quality or delivery.
  • Work cooperatively with Painters, Body Technicians, Detailers, Parts, Estimators, and management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SAFETY & COMPLIANCE

  • Follow all company safety policies and environmental requirements.
  • Properly use required PPE.
  • Follow procedures for handling paints, solvents, cleaners, and other chemicals.
  • Follow SDS and product-specific safety requirements.
  • Report spills, injuries, unsafe conditions, equipment problems, or vehicle damage immediately.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Ability to safely work around automotive paints, chemicals, dust, and fumes.
  • Basic ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Willingness to learn automotive refinishing.

Preferred:

  • Collision repair, automotive, detailing, or body shop experience.
  • Automotive vocational training.
  • Previous sanding, masking, or preparation experience.
