Job Description

The Quality Control Technician prepares and tests metal samples to support quality, production, and research teams. This role focuses on sample preparation, functional testing, data entry, and documentation to ensure copper products meet established quality standards. The technician follows detailed analytical procedures, maintains accurate laboratory records, and supports continuous process control in a hands-on, lab-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare metal samples for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical analysis, including cross-sectioning, potting, and surface preparation techniques such as sanding, paste transfer, and polishing.
  • Conduct functional testing such as International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) measurements and thermal conductivity testing as needed.
  • Follow written analytical procedures and validate established methods to ensure consistent and reliable testing results.
  • Troubleshoot testing procedures and basic process issues, and escalate more complex problems appropriately.
  • Collect, enter, review, and validate data in WinLIMS or similar laboratory information management systems, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform calculations based on test results and submit final data for review and approval in accordance with established processes.
  • Communicate sample status, test results, and any issues clearly and promptly to Quality, Production, and Research and Development teams.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date laboratory documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), test methods, protocols, deviations, batch records, and certificates of analysis (COAs).
  • Handle hazardous materials safely, including proper labeling, storage, and disposal in compliance with site safety and chemical hygiene protocols.
  • Follow all site safety procedures, chemical hygiene guidelines, and laboratory best practices to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Support process control by closely monitoring test results, identifying trends, and helping ensure products consistently meet quality requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with team members, follow instructions, and contribute to a culture of quality and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills

  • Background in materials testing, metals, quality control, or laboratory work (including academic lab experience).
  • Experience preparing and handling metal samples for testing and analysis.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and log process data accurately.
  • Ability to collect, enter, review, and validate data in systems such as WinLIMS or similar data management tools.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on process control, documentation, and maintaining quality standards.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, follow written and verbal instructions, and communicate clearly.
  • Hands-on aptitude with good time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, reach, and use fine tools to prepare and handle samples.
  • Capability to occasionally lift small weights or handle assemblies as required by the role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with statistical analysis software such as Minitab.
  • Experience working with components or materials used in printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Previous experience in a quality control laboratory or production environment.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety practices and chemical hygiene protocols.
  • Comfort working in a physical, hands-on role involving sanding, paste transfer, polishing, and other sample preparation techniques.

Work Environment

This is a hands-on, lab-based role that involves frequent physical activity, including standing for extended periods, reaching, and using fine tools to prepare metal samples. The position focuses on preparing and testing metal materials that will be used in components for printed circuit boards (PCBs). The work environment includes the use of laboratory equipment for SEM and optical analysis, functional testing tools for IACS and thermal conductivity, and data management systems such as WinLIMS, along with standard office software like Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. The role requires safe handling of hazardous materials, adherence to chemical hygiene and site safety protocols, and careful management of sample preparation processes such as sanding, paste transfer, and polishing. The technician works closely with Quality, Production, and R&D teams in a collaborative environment that emphasizes accuracy, documentation, and process control.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Fremont, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $35.00/hr.
