Job Description
The Metals Inspector observes and monitors incoming scrap metal deliveries to verify they meet quality and quantity specifications while consistently following Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. This role supports daily production operations, including receiving and stockpiling materials, and requires a solid understanding of raw materials, production processes, and techniques that ensure efficient receipt and transfer of quality product in a busy scrap metal yard.
Responsibilities
- Inspect incoming shipments of scrap metal received via truck, rail car, or ship to ensure they meet established specifications and comply with scrap acceptance policies.
- Verify that all materials are free from environmental hazards and reject or flag nonconforming loads as required.
- Accurately identify, measure, and record inspection data, including weight, grade, content, and quantity of scrap metal.
- Communicate inspection issues promptly to operations and commercial supervisors and assist in recommending corrective actions or remedial procedures.
- Support daily production operations by helping with receiving, sorting, and stockpiling materials and products.
- Perform general labor tasks in the scrap yard, including cleaning and sweeping work areas to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Move materials and scrap metal using appropriate tools or equipment as directed to support production flow.
- Remove debris and waste from work areas to reduce hazards and maintain operational efficiency.
- Assist with general facility upkeep, including routine housekeeping tasks in both indoor and outdoor areas.
- Follow all company Health, Safety, and Environmental procedures and use required personal protective equipment at all times.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of related work experience in construction, machine shop, manufacturing, or production environments.
- Minimum 1 year of experience performing any type of inspection work that demonstrates strong attention to detail.
- Ability to accurately observe, identify, and document material characteristics such as weight, grade, content, and quantity.
- Familiarity with raw materials and production processes related to metals or similar industrial environments.
- Capability to perform general labor tasks, including lifting, moving, and sorting materials in a physically demanding setting.
- Strong focus on safety and adherence to Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
- Ability to work effectively in noisy, dirty, and fast-paced environments with heavy machinery and moving parts.
- Basic recordkeeping skills to log inspection data clearly and accurately.
- Effective communication skills to report issues and collaborate with supervisors and team members.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in general labor, production, or maintenance roles in industrial or recycling settings.
- Background in sorting, cleaning, or sweeping tasks within a yard, warehouse, or manufacturing facility.
- Exposure to scrap metal handling or recycling operations.
- Comfort working in both indoor production areas and large outdoor yards.
- Ability to adapt to different departments and work assignments as operational needs change.

Work Environment
The role is based at a steel, metal, and auto recycling facility with both an indoor production area and a large outdoor yard. The site operates heavy machinery and equipment, with many moving parts, loud noise levels, and very dirty conditions typical of a scrap metal yard. You may work in a partially covered area (Joint Products) or in an open yard area with similar processes, depending on departmental assignment. The work involves being on your feet for most of the shift, performing physical tasks such as lifting, moving, and sorting materials. You will work around steel and metal products in an industrial setting where adherence to safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment is essential.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oakland, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
