Job Title: Phlebotomist I

Job Description

The Phlebotomist I plays a key role in collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. This position performs blood draws and other specimen collections, ensures accurate labeling and processing, assists with troubleshooting, and contributes to training and workflow improvement in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
  • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verifying that all information is complete and accurate.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order, ensuring proper handling to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens for transport, following specific protocols and temperature requirements to preserve specimen quality.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Follow the procedures outlined in specific protocols to ensure proper preparation and transport of specimens.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a clean and safe laboratory environment.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure all documentation is complete and up to date.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
  • Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Participate in training activities, sharing knowledge and demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques as needed.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, as well as all applicable safety and compliance standards.
  • Attend annual department trainings and stay current with procedural updates and regulatory requirements.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and, when appropriate, read laboratory results to callers to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Experience performing blood draws and venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify orders.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in labeling, processing, and documentation.
  • Understanding of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0–2 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with patient populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Ability to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and improve cooperation.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced clinical or hospital environment with changing priorities.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel.
  • Ability to answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results accurately when appropriate.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and workflow improvement initiatives.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, where you will perform frequent blood draws and handle specimens throughout the day. The typical schedule is an 8-hour shift between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, depending on location needs. You may be required to start as early as 6:00 AM or work as late as 6:00 PM. The position also requires rotating weekend coverage, which may be as minimal as one weekend per month. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen packaging materials, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The environment emphasizes adherence to safety, decontamination, and regulatory standards, with regular department training to keep procedures current.

This is a Contract position based out of Vista, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $22.00/hr.
