Job Description
The Production Planner ensures that all production orders are fully material-ready, realistically scheduled, and completed on or before their committed due dates. This role serves as a critical link between Operations, Supply Chain, and Customer Service, using the ERP system as the primary planning tool to manage material shortages, allocate inventory, and maintain accurate production order data. The planner supports the transition from reactive expediting to proactive planning, helping to improve on-time delivery performance and support business growth across a variety of industries.
Responsibilities
- Review daily material shortage and exception reports in the ERP system to identify shortages for open production orders and upcoming jobs.
- Analyze component availability and lead times to determine realistic start and completion dates for production orders, and update job dates in the ERP accordingly.
- Allocate and reallocate material across production orders based on priorities, customer commitments, and production capacity, escalating tradeoffs when necessary.
- Partner with Procurement to expedite, reschedule, or substitute components for jobs with material shortages, providing clear priorities for buyers and planners.
- Coordinate with internal manufacturing and internal sub-assembly teams on make-to-order items that are constraining production orders.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date job order notes in the ERP, including shortage status, planned completion dates, and key assumptions or constraints.
- Track and report which jobs are fully kitted and material-clear versus those blocked by shortages, providing clear visibility to production managers.
- Support production managers in sequencing and leveling the build schedule so that material-ready jobs are prioritized while respecting capacity constraints.
- Monitor and adjust production order dates as material and capacity conditions change, and communicate any impacts on delivery dates to stakeholders.
- Participate in regular operations and production meetings to review current shortages, upcoming risks, and mitigation plans.
- Use the ERP system as the primary tool for planning, ensuring that production order dates, statuses, and material allocations remain accurate and current.
- Estimate expected completion dates on production orders based on incoming material, labor requirements, and production capacity.
- Help define, validate, and maintain key planning and shortage reports in the ERP, such as shortage by job, jobs not material clear, and late components versus order due dates.
- Identify data quality issues, including incorrect lead times, bill of materials errors, and missing planning parameters, and work with appropriate teams to correct them.
- Support the organization’s transition from reactive expediting to proactive planning by improving planning processes and data accuracy.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience using an ERP system as the primary tool for production planning, including managing production order dates, statuses, and material allocations.
- Strong ability to review and interpret daily material shortage and exception reports in an ERP environment.
- Demonstrated skill in analyzing component availability and lead times to set realistic production start and completion dates.
- Experience coordinating with Procurement to expedite, reschedule, or substitute components for jobs with material shortages.
- Capability to collaborate effectively with internal manufacturing and sub-assembly teams on make-to-order items.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate job order notes, including shortage status, planned completion dates, and key assumptions.
- Ability to track and report job readiness, distinguishing between fully kitted, material-clear jobs and those blocked by shortages.
- Experience supporting production scheduling, including sequencing and leveling build schedules while considering capacity constraints.
- Competence in identifying and resolving data quality issues such as incorrect lead times, bill of materials errors, and missing planning parameters.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills to convey schedule changes, material constraints, and delivery impacts to stakeholders.
- Attention to detail and accuracy when working with planning data and ERP reports.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience or familiarity with electro-mechanical assembly environments.
- Ability to read and understand schematics related to electro-mechanical assemblies.
- Experience with inspection and electrical assembly processes.
- Exposure to planning and shortage reporting tools within ERP systems, including shortage by job and jobs not material clear reports.
- Interest in contributing to continuous improvement of planning processes and reporting.
Why Work Here?
You will join an organization that values proactive planning, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous improvement in operations. The role offers the opportunity to make a visible impact on on-time delivery performance and business growth by improving planning accuracy and material readiness. You will work closely with operations, supply chain, and customer-facing teams, gaining broad exposure to the end-to-end production process and building strong professional relationships across the business.
