Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
This phlebotomist role focuses on collecting high-quality specimens from patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and inpatient hospital populations. You will perform blood collection using venipuncture and capillary techniques, process and package specimens for laboratory testing, and support additional laboratory procedures as needed. The position requires strong technical skills, attention to safety and compliance, and the ability to work effectively across multiple shifts in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting.
Responsibilities
- Collect blood specimens using venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups, including pediatric and neonatal patients.
- Perform pediatric blood collections and confidently manage difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and inpatient hospital settings.
- Draw and label samples accurately, ensuring correct patient identification and proper handling of all specimens.
- Process specimens for laboratory testing, including preparing, packaging, and routing samples according to established procedures.
- Assist with additional laboratory procedures and support general lab operations as needed under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead.
- Work with pediatric patients under supervision, maintaining a calm, supportive, and professional approach during all procedures.
- Draw blood from psych patients and maintain a safe, respectful, and professional environment during all interactions.
- Manage high patient volumes in an inpatient hospital setting, including drawing blood from approximately 20–30 patients within a shift.
- Apply a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards in all aspects of phlebotomy and specimen handling.
- Communicate the importance of safety, compliance, and quality procedures effectively to other employees.
- Utilize laboratory information systems (such as Cerner) to enter, track, and verify laboratory orders and specimen information.
- Deliver professional, courteous customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff during all interactions.
- Maintain accurate documentation and follow all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
- Participate in training and orientation, including full-time hours initially to become acclimated to the facility and processes.
- Support specimen processing needs as requested, including during training and regular shifts.
- Adapt to varying schedules and shifts, including PM, overnight (NOC), and potentially AM shifts, based on department needs.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups.
- Demonstrated experience with pediatric blood collections, including infant and neonatal draws.
- Inpatient hospital setting experience, with the ability to draw 20–30 patients within a single shift.
- At least six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting, with a preference for at least one year.
- High school diploma (HS Diploma).
- Current CPT 1 License.
- Computer proficiency and comfort working with laboratory information systems (for example, Cerner).
- Strong customer service skills and a patient-centered approach.
- Open availability to work various shifts, including PM and overnight (NOC), with potential AM shifts.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting, preferably at least one year.
- Infant draw and neonatal experience, particularly in an inpatient or pediatric environment.
- Comfort working with pediatric and psych patient populations in a hospital setting.
- Ability to handle high patient volumes while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Flexibility to work PM, overnight, and potentially AM shifts based on operational needs.
- Willingness to participate in training on day shifts before transitioning to NOC shifts.
Work Environment
This position is based in an inpatient hospital environment, supporting a registry float pool that provides coverage for paid time off and vacation needs. You will work in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting, primarily in a laboratory and patient care environment that includes pediatric, neonatal, and psych patient populations. The role involves working across multiple shifts, with open availability preferred. Typical AM shifts run from 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and NOC shifts run from 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with schedules provided four weeks in advance. Initial training involves full-time hours to become acclimated to the facility and may include day-shift training (around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m.), particularly for those transitioning into NOC shifts. You may also assist with specimen processing as part of your regular duties. The environment is technology-driven, utilizing laboratory information systems such as Cerner, analyzers, and other lab equipment, and follows structured quality control and safety protocols. The role requires comfort working in a fast-paced, clinical setting with consistent patient interaction and collaboration with laboratory and clinical teams.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Bernardino, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
