The Building Engineer operates, maintains, and troubleshoots complex building and laboratory infrastructure in a fast-paced biotech environment. This role focuses on hands-on work with Building Management Systems (BMS), HVAC and MEP systems, and specialized lab support equipment to ensure reliable, safe, and efficient facility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot Building Management Systems (BMS) across multiple platforms, including ALC and Schneider.
  • Perform daily inspections and preventive maintenance on building systems, including HVAC and other MEP infrastructure.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical equipment such as air handlers, chillers, cooling towers, exhaust fans, and VAV systems in real time without relying solely on vendors.
  • Respond to and resolve service requests submitted through a ticketing system, as well as via phone and email, in a timely and professional manner.
  • Coordinate with external vendors for specialized repairs while remaining actively involved in hands-on execution of maintenance and repair work.
  • Support laboratory operations by assisting with equipment installations, facility upgrades, and infrastructure modifications.
  • Partner closely with operations and environmental health and safety (EH&S) teams on maintenance activities, facility projects, and emergency response efforts.
  • Assist with utilities, gases, and materials support required for lab environments, ensuring continuous and safe supply to critical systems.
  • Provide after-hours support as part of an on-call rotation, including approximately one weekend per month, to address urgent building or lab issues.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain lab and biotech support equipment such as nitrogen generators, air compressors, and air dryers.
  • Document maintenance activities and repairs accurately to support ongoing reliability and compliance.
  • Contribute to a culture of safety by following established procedures and identifying opportunities to improve facility reliability and performance.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of hands-on building engineer or mechanical experience in facilities, industrial, or similar environments.
  • Strong experience operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting Building Management Systems (BMS), with exposure to platforms such as ALC and Schneider.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and repair building and mechanical issues in real time without being vendor-reliant.
  • Hands-on experience with HVAC and MEP systems, including air handlers, chillers, cooling towers, exhaust fans, and VAV systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilities maintenance, including electrical, HVAC, and general mechanical repair.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of building systems and lab-supporting equipment.
  • Experience working with lab or biotech equipment, including nitrogen generators, air compressors, and air dryers.
  • Polished communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels, including leadership.
  • Strong customer-service mindset, with a focus on responsiveness and clear communication.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, highly technical environment where priorities can shift quickly.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in biotech or life sciences facilities is highly aligned and strongly preferred.
  • Experience in industrial or manufacturing environments, such as aerospace or large-scale production facilities, is highly relevant.
  • Experience beyond purely commercial office facilities, with deeper mechanical exposure, is preferred.
  • Familiarity with coordinated work alongside operations and EH&S teams in regulated or safety-focused environments.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and service requests while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Adaptability to evolving technologies and facility upgrades in a cutting-edge biotech setting.
