JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, coordinates and schedules driver assignments for the fixed bus routes, evening shift, lift-bus operations for physically and visually impaired, lunch relief and tours. Monitors and assists in the operation of the two-way radio and telephone communications. Assists in maintaining a safe, efficient transportation system, acts as liaison between the public and department staff. Updates and maintains data for the bus system and files required paperwork; performs related work as required. Assists other General Services division supervisors and managers with coordinating work and processing paperwork. Work involves regular contact with other divisions, departments, residents, vendors and the public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coordinates and schedules drivers assignments for fixed bus routes, evening shift, lift–bus, lunch relief’s and tours; monitors arrival and departure times of drivers/buses from Clubhouse 1 and designated bus stop; and assigns special requests assignments as necessary communicating with public, transportation, clubhouse and Security Gate Clearance System.

Completes necessary forms for daily operation, notifies mechanic staff of mechanical problems with buses as they arise. Monitors schedules and informs supervisor of problems with routes and/or schedules; monitors two-way radio base station to communicate with drivers; and contacts security in case of emergencies, accidents or incidents which may occur during daily operation of bus system.

Maintains records and updates for current information surrounding route schedules, driver left-right turn guide and all Friday night church pick-up list; performs varied clerical duties as required, including data entry.

Conducts research, processes paperwork, schedules and coordinates work in the field and at GRF facilities for other General Services divisions. Enters purchase requisitions, performs data entry, record keeping, filing, and scanning, and other duties as assigned.

Serves as back-up bus drivers as needed; in this capacity, drives a bus in a safe manner to designated stops; screens all passengers entering to assure only residents use service, gives directions to passengers requesting help; assists passengers using mobility devices to board, and secure devices and restraints or tie downs; and may require the driver to kneel to secure the wheelchair restraints. Reports accidents immediately to dispatcher, requesting police or ambulance service as needed. Completes company accident reports. Reports any maintenance problems encountered while driving the bus. Utilizes all available gauges and instrumentation and knowledge of bus components and function to communicate problem accurately.

Regular Attendance Required. All duties performed on-site for the Community.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Understands and communicates transportation and company policies, the Vehicle Code Laws and Regulations, safe driving practices, working methods and procedures governing drivers that maintain a commercial or non-commercial driver’s license. Able to prepare in writing or verbally any special project proposals for changes and improvement of the transportation system as directed or needed.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Company vehicle, car, bus, computer, printer, copier, telephone, two way radio.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a climate-controlled indoor office. While driving a bus, the employee is exposed to outdoor elements including exhaust fumes from buses.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school including two years’ experience in transporting, communicating with passengers, and co-workers or equivalent combination of education and experience which produces the following:

· Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.

· Knowledge of computer and applicable software programs.

· Knowledge of the geography of the community.

· Ability to read, understand, interpret and explain rules and regulations.

· Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written directions.

· Ability to relate to the needs and concerns of residents.

· Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees, the public and to deal with public relations problems courteously and tactfully.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Possession of a valid California Driver’s License

· Possession of a Commercial B License with passenger endorsement

· Medical Certificate Examination (DL 51) is required every year to drive at VMS

· Enrollment in the DMV Pull Notice Program

· Enrollment in the Random Testing Program for Controlled Substances and Alcohol

· Ability to pass the Functional Capacity Test showing ability to safely handle and secure passengers using mobility devices upon hire and on an annual basis

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, grasp, feel, reach, carry and lift up to 10 lbs. The employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time (up to 4 hours) and use repetitive motion to operate a keyboard for long periods (up to 2 hours). The employee is occasionally required to carry, kneel, pull, push, stoop, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

When driving the bus: the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, grasp, feel, reach, and sit for long periods of time (up to 50 minutes) while driving. The employee is occasionally twisting, bending, standing, stooping, and kneeling. Normal hearing is required to hear emergency vehicles, passengers riding the bus, and ability to hear the two-way radio over the engine and traffic noise.

Physical dexterity and strength is required to assist passengers using mobility devices to board and secure such devices with tie downs. Requires the driver to push a wheelchair-bound passenger (weighing up to approximately 300 pounds) up a moderate incline and then kneel or squat to secure the wheelchair restraints, and rise with little or no assistance. Moderate grip strength is required to secure and release the restraints.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee trains, reasons, reads, solves problems, uses verbal and written communication skills, and has customer contact.
