Position Summary

The Paint Prep Technician is responsible for preparing agricultural equipment and metal surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, masking, repairing, and priming materials to ensure proper paint adhesion and high-quality finishes. This role supports production operations by maintaining paint preparation standards, safety compliance, and workflow efficiency.


Essential Job Functions

  • Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, grinding, masking, buffing, and removing contaminants.
  • Inspect surfaces and components for damage, corrosion, or defects prior to painting.
  • Perform basic surface repairs and apply primer or protective coatings as needed.
  • Mix paints, primers, and coatings according to specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Load and maintain paint preparation and spray equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Conduct quality checks to ensure surfaces meet paint preparation and finish requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records, including VOC logs, material usage, and production documentation.
  • Monitor inventory levels of paint preparation materials and notify supervisors when supplies are needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in accordance with company standards.
  • Collaborate with painters, production staff, and supervisors to support production schedules and workflow.
  • Follow all company safety policies and Cal/OSHA regulations, including proper handling of chemicals, ventilation requirements, and PPE use.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance and punctuality consistent with the operational needs of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, in accordance with applicable California law.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Authorized to work in United States.
  • Assist with training new employees as assigned.
  • Support inventory organization and material restocking activities.
  • Meet production deadlines and work flexible hours, including occasional overtime.
  • Comply with all company policies, including California meal and rest period requirements.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in paint preparation, auto body, manufacturing, or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation techniques, paint materials, and equipment operation.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, sanding equipment, and paint preparation tools.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders and production instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong safety awareness and understanding of proper chemical handling procedures.


Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive tasks throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 pounds (heavier with assistance or equipment).
  • Exposure to paint materials, solvents, dust, fumes, noise, and varying temperatures.
  • Occasional work on ladders, platforms, or elevated surfaces using proper safety equipment.
  • Required use of PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and protective clothing.
