Job Description

The Collaborating & Supervising Physician provides clinical oversight, supervision, and collaboration for nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) practicing within the organization. This position is primarily administrative and supervisory in nature and does not require direct patient care unless otherwise assigned.

The physician ensures that care delivered by NPs and PAs meets applicable standards of practice, regulatory requirements, organizational policies, and evidence-based medicine guidelines. The physician serves as a clinical resource, participates in chart review and quality assurance activities, and is available for consultation regarding complex patient cases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide physician collaboration and supervision for NPs and PAs in accordance with applicable state laws and regulations.
  • Conduct periodic chart reviews, audits, and quality assurance activities.
  • Be available for consultation regarding complex or high-risk patient cases.
  • Review clinical protocols, standing orders, and treatment pathways.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining clinical policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and payer requirements.
  • Participate in peer review and clinical governance activities.
  • Support provider education, mentorship, and professional development.
  • Collaborate with leadership to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
  • Assist with accreditation, credentialing, and regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Participate in risk management and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide documentation or attestations required by regulatory agencies or payers.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current unrestricted medical license in the applicable state(s) of practice.
  • Board certification in an applicable specialty.
  • Active DEA registration (if required).
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Experience supervising or collaborating with advanced practice providers preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of NP and PA supervision requirements.
  • Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to provide effective mentorship and clinical guidance.
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems and quality improvement processes.
  • Understanding of healthcare regulations and payer requirements.

Work Environment

  • Primarily administrative and remote-capable, depending on organizational needs.
  • Minimal or no direct patient care responsibilities.
  • Flexible scheduling may be available.

Compensation

Compensation may be structured as:

  • Fixed monthly supervision stipend;
  • Per-provider supervision fee; or
  • Part-time employment arrangement.
