Job Description
Job title:
HDD Directional Drill Operator & Locator – Class A CDL
Company: Hankins Information Technology, Inc.
Employment type: Full-time
Pay: $35–$95/hr (prevailing wage on qualifying projects)
Job description:
Hankins Information Technology, Inc. is hiring an experienced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operator and locator to run production bores on utility and telecom installation projects. We need a seasoned hand who consistently hits 1,200+ feet of bore per day and keeps the crew moving — someone who knows the rig, reads the locating equipment, and makes smart calls in the field. You'll be running a Vermeer D23x30 directional drill paired with a DCI DigiTrak Falcon F5 locating system. Many of our projects pay prevailing wage.
What you'll do:
- Operate a Vermeer D23x30 HDD rig to drill and backream bores for conduit, fiber, and utility installs
- Run the DigiTrak Falcon F5 locating/tracking system to steer bores accurately to depth and grade
- Read and interpret bore plans, utility locates, and as-builts
- Mix and manage drilling fluids/mud to match soil conditions
- Pothole and verify existing utilities before drilling
- Hold daily production targets of 1,200+ ft/day
- Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance
- Keep the site compliant with OSHA and 811/one-call damage-prevention standards
What you need:
- Proven experience operating HDD directional drills and locating — hands-on time with a Vermeer D23x30 (or comparable) and Falcon F5 (or similar walkover locator) strongly preferred
- Class A CDL (required)
- Track record of high-production days (1,200+ ft/day)
- Solid understanding of drilling fluids, soil conditions, and bore planning
- Ability to read locates and protect existing utilities
- Safety-focused; able to pass drug screen and background check
Preferred:
- Telecom/fiber and utility installation experience
- Additional CDL endorsements
- Vac/hydro excavation experience
What we offer:
- Competitive pay, $35–$95/hr depending on experience and production
- Prevailing wage on qualifying projects
- Paid benefits (health, paid time off, holidays)
- Steady, full-time work
- Drug-free workplace — we're committed to a safe job site for the whole crew
Company DescriptionWe started this company because we felt the pain of all our neighbors. Low speeds and sometimes no service just wasn't cutting it in this day and age. Everyone has an increased need for the internet. Streaming movies, music, e-mail and social media are common everyday uses now. DSL isn't enough in this rural area and for most folks, wasn't even available.
We setup the infrastructure to meet future needs with a dedicated fiber connection. We are using carrier grade wireless radios to deliver internet to the rural areas of South County and Gilroy
