Job Overview:

\n

The Fresno VA Medical Center is seeking experienced Sterile Processing Technicians (SPT) to support the Sterile Processing Service (SPS). The technician will be responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, tracking, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME) while ensuring compliance with VA, AAMI, AORN, FDA, and OSHA standards.

\n

\n

Key Responsibilities:

\n

    \n
  • Perform decontamination and cleaning of reusable surgical instruments using appropriate PPE and infection control protocols.
  • \n

  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, damage, functionality, corrosion, pitting, cracks, and biological residue.
  • \n

  • Assemble, package, wrap, label, and prepare instrument trays while maintaining sterility.
  • \n

  • Operate sterilization equipment including Steam Autoclaves, V-Pro Sterilizers, Automated Washers, and Ultrasonic Cleaners.
  • \n

  • Monitor sterilization cycles and accurately document biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators.
  • \n

  • Perform documentation and instrument tracking using CensiTrac.
  • \n

  • Prepare case carts and maintain inventory for surgical procedures.
  • \n

  • Reprocess flexible endoscopes (if applicable).
  • \n

  • Transport contaminated and sterile reusable medical equipment throughout the facility.
  • \n

  • Follow AAMI ST79, AORN, OSHA, FDA, VA Directives, and Facility SOPs.
  • \n

  • Assist with orientation and training of new Sterile Processing staff when required.
  • \n

\n

\n

Minimum Qualifications:

\n

    \n
  • Minimum 2 years of Sterile Processing experience.
  • \n

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • \n

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • \n

  • Current BLS Certification.
  • \n

  • One of the following active certifications is required: \n
      \n
    • HSPA (IAHCSMM) – CRCST, or
    • \n

    • CBSPD Certification
    • \n

  • \n

  • Strong knowledge of sterilization standards, reusable medical equipment (RME), and infection prevention protocols.
  • \n

\n

\n

Preferred Skills:

\n

    \n
  • Experience with complex instrument decontamination.
  • \n

  • Surgical tray assembly and specialty instrumentation.
  • \n

  • Endoscope reprocessing.
  • \n

  • Inventory management and case cart preparation.
  • \n

  • Experience working in hospital or VA Sterile Processing departments.
  • \n

\n

  • Credentialing and onboarding typically require 6–8 weeks.
  • \n
