Job Description
Staff Mechanical Design Engineer (EPC) — Engineer of Record for Facilities That Matter
San Francisco, CA | Full-Time | $187,500 – $247,500
The Opportunity
There's mechanical design, and then there's owning every mechanical and plumbing system across chemical process plants, hazardous occupancy spaces, clean rooms, and labs — as the Engineer of Record. Our client, a rapidly scaling clean energy innovator, is hiring a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to carry that ownership from specification through field commissioning. If you want your engineering judgment to be the final word, and Bay Area compensation to go with it, read on.
Why You'll Love It
- Top-of-market pay: $187.5K–$247.5K base
- Full MEOR ownership: Specs, calcs, permit and construction documents — your name, your call
- Systems most engineers never touch: Abatement (thermal oxidizers, scrubbers), process heating/cooling, industrial water, clean/dry space HVAC
- Desk and field: Real commissioning involvement as the technical point of contact
What You'll Do
- Serve as Mechanical Engineer of Record across hazardous occupancy, clean/dry space, and chemical process/industrial projects
- Own design for mechanical and plumbing systems — industrial/non-potable water, HVAC (labs, offices, plants), process heating and cooling, humidification, abatement systems, cooling towers, fans, pumps
- Review conceptual designs from developing engineers and surface technical and financial risks
- Hold every deliverable to code compliance and the highest quality bar
- Build and refine workflows and standards for consistently excellent design
- Resolve technical questions in real time during construction and commissioning
- Collaborate across disciplines on general arrangements, P&IDs, isometrics, tie-ins, and takeoffs
- Travel to sites and meetings as needed
What You'll Bring
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Licensed PE with NCEES record; able to apply for NV and SC
- 7+ years in HVAC and plumbing/fire protection design
- Expert fluency in ICC codes, NFPA, SMACNA, ACGIH, and ASHRAE
- Hands-on design of chillers, boilers, AHUs, heat pumps, heat rejection, dust collection, humidification, fans, pumps
- Preferred: thermal oxidizers and scrubbers, heat exchangers, control valves/instrumentation, heat recovery
- Sequences of operation, duct and pipe specification, and construction spec writing
- Revit and AutoCAD proficiency; equipment sourcing and RFP experience
- Software depth: Pipe-Flo, Caesar II, AspenTech/AFT, Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, Navisworks, Bluebeam
