Job Description

Job Description

Job Title: CNC Machinist – Horizontal 5–6 Axis Lathes

Pay: Up to $48

Job Description

This role focuses on setting up and operating complex CNC horizontal lathes with 5–6 axis capabilities to produce high-precision components. You interpret detailed blueprints, select appropriate tooling, edit and optimize G-code programs, and perform precise measurements to ensure parts meet tight tolerances. You work from job instructions, optimize feeds and speeds, and ensure that finished parts are deburred, inspected, and ready for downstream operations in a clean, modern machine shop environment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC horizontal lathes with 5–6 axis capabilities to produce precision components according to engineering specifications.
  • Interpret and follow detailed blueprints, customer specifications, and job instructions to plan machining operations.
  • Select and install appropriate tooling, workholding, and fixtures, and verify correct machine set up before production runs.
  • Edit, adjust, and optimize G-code programs at the machine to improve quality, efficiency, and cycle times while maintaining part integrity.
  • Adjust feeds, speeds, and offsets during production to maintain tight tolerances and consistent part quality.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections using calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Apply GD&T principles when reading and interpreting prints to ensure all geometric requirements are met.
  • Deburr and finish machined components to meet quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Use machine operation software and CNC control interfaces to load programs, set work coordinates, and monitor machine performance.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to minimize scrap and rework.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and basic computer entries related to jobs, setups, and inspection results as required.
  • Follow all safety requirements and standard operating procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of debris, and perform basic preventive maintenance on machines as needed.
  • Collaborate with teammates, engineering, and leadership to resolve production issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Meet production schedules by managing time effectively, communicating issues promptly, and supporting shift handoffs when necessary.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience as a machinist, with hands-on CNC machining experience.
  • Proficiency in setting up and operating CNC lathes, including horizontal lathes with 5–6 axis capabilities.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills, including the ability to interpret detailed drawings and customer specifications.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and its application to precision machining.
  • Ability to edit and adjust G-code programs at the machine to refine machining operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complete CNC set ups, including tooling selection and workholding.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus advanced technical or vocational training in machining or a related field.
  • Ability to use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and related inspection equipment.
  • Mastery of basic math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions.
  • Basic computer skills for accessing job instructions, documenting work, and interfacing with shop systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality parts.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to diagnose and resolve machining and quality issues.
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with co-workers and support a positive team environment.
  • Understanding of and adherence to ITAR-related compliance requirements.
  • Ability to understand and obey all safety requirements and shop policies.
  • Capability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive hand and arm motions, including reaching, handling, and feeling.
  • Adequate vision for close and distance work, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for detailed inspection tasks.
