Compensation: $145,000–$165,000 DOE + Comprehensive Benefits

Overview:

An established and well-respected construction company in Sonoma County is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all accounting, financial reporting, payroll, and administrative operations. This is a hands-on leadership role offering the opportunity to partner directly with ownership and play a key role in the continued growth and success of the organization.

The ideal candidate is a construction accounting professional who enjoys balancing strategic financial leadership with day-to-day operational involvement. You'll collaborate closely with project management, estimating, and operations while ensuring the financial integrity of the business.

What You'll Do

  • Lead all accounting functions including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, General Ledger, Cash Management, and Month-End Close.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for ownership.
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial planning.
  • Oversee construction accounting including:
    • Job Costing
    • Work-in-Progress (WIP) Reporting
    • Cost-to-Complete Analysis
    • Progress Billing
    • AIA Billing
    • Change Orders
    • Retainage Tracking
  • Review contracts and ensure compliance with customer billing requirements.
  • Manage billing packages including invoices, lien waivers, preliminary notices, certificates of insurance, and related contract documentation.
  • Oversee customer receivables, collections, payment processing, and banking activities.
  • Lead payroll operations including certified payroll, prevailing wage compliance, payroll taxes, and labor cost allocations.
  • Administer employee benefits, onboarding/offboarding, and HR compliance.
  • Coordinate annual audits, tax preparation, payroll reporting, and internal controls.
  • Partner with Project Managers, Estimators, and Operations to improve financial reporting and project profitability.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff while remaining actively involved in daily accounting operations.

What We're Looking For

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry.
  • 3+ years in a Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior accounting leadership role.
  • Extensive experience with:
    • Construction Accounting
    • Job Costing
    • WIP Reporting
    • Progress Billing
    • Certified Payroll
    • Prevailing Wage Compliance
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Experience preparing monthly financial statements and managing month-end close.
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting and construction ERP software.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • A collaborative, hands-on management style with the ability to work across multiple departments.
