Overview:
An established and well-respected construction company in Sonoma County is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee all accounting, financial reporting, payroll, and administrative operations. This is a hands-on leadership role offering the opportunity to partner directly with ownership and play a key role in the continued growth and success of the organization.
The ideal candidate is a construction accounting professional who enjoys balancing strategic financial leadership with day-to-day operational involvement. You'll collaborate closely with project management, estimating, and operations while ensuring the financial integrity of the business.
What You'll Do
- Lead all accounting functions including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, General Ledger, Cash Management, and Month-End Close.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for ownership.
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial planning.
- Oversee construction accounting including:
- Job Costing
- Work-in-Progress (WIP) Reporting
- Cost-to-Complete Analysis
- Progress Billing
- AIA Billing
- Change Orders
- Retainage Tracking
- Review contracts and ensure compliance with customer billing requirements.
- Manage billing packages including invoices, lien waivers, preliminary notices, certificates of insurance, and related contract documentation.
- Oversee customer receivables, collections, payment processing, and banking activities.
- Lead payroll operations including certified payroll, prevailing wage compliance, payroll taxes, and labor cost allocations.
- Administer employee benefits, onboarding/offboarding, and HR compliance.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax preparation, payroll reporting, and internal controls.
- Partner with Project Managers, Estimators, and Operations to improve financial reporting and project profitability.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff while remaining actively involved in daily accounting operations.
What We're Looking For
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry.
- 3+ years in a Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior accounting leadership role.
- Extensive experience with:
- Construction Accounting
- Job Costing
- WIP Reporting
- Progress Billing
- Certified Payroll
- Prevailing Wage Compliance
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience preparing monthly financial statements and managing month-end close.
- Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting and construction ERP software.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
- A collaborative, hands-on management style with the ability to work across multiple departments.
