Chemistry Expert (PhD) – AI Safety

Location: Remote (United States)

Engagement Type: Part-Time

Compensation: $65–$70/hour

\n

Commitment: 15–25 hours per week (flexible up to 40 hours per week)

About the Opportunity

\n

This opportunity is for PhD-level Chemistry experts interested in contributing to advanced AI safety and evaluation projects. The role involves applying scientific expertise to evaluate and improve how next-generation AI systems understand and respond to specialized chemistry topics.

\n

No prior AI or machine learning experience is required. Training and guidance on the evaluation workflow will be provided.

\n

Responsibilities

\n

    \n
  • Develop expert-level prompts across specialized chemistry topics.
  • \n

  • Evaluate and annotate AI-generated responses for scientific accuracy, quality, and helpfulness.
  • \n

  • Assess whether AI systems appropriately handle sensitive or safety-relevant chemistry content.
  • \n

  • Apply structured evaluation guidelines to classify and review prompts, responses, and conversations.
  • \n

  • Identify scientific inaccuracies, reasoning gaps, and potential safety concerns in AI-generated content.
  • \n

  • Apply domain expertise to help improve the accuracy, reliability, and safety of advanced AI systems.
  • \n

Required Qualifications

\n

    \n
  • PhD in Chemistry or a closely related field, either ongoing or completed.
  • \n

  • Expertise in one or more relevant disciplines, including Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science.
  • \n

  • Deep familiarity with modern laboratory and/or computational techniques within your area of expertise.
  • \n

  • Strong scientific reasoning, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
  • \n

  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills in English.
  • \n

  • Strong judgment regarding chemical safety and the responsible handling of dual-use scientific information.
  • \n

  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to scientific accuracy.
  • \n

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • \n

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research or academic experience related to chemical safety, chemical security, synthesis, or hazardous materials handling.
  • \n

  • Experience reviewing, grading, evaluating, or red-teaming technical or scientific content.
  • \n

  • Experience in academic research, industry laboratories, or interdisciplinary scientific projects.
  • \n
