Job Description
Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer (EPC) — Transmission-Scale Design, Mission-Scale Impact
San Francisco, CA | Full-Time | $190,000 – $252,500
The Opportunity
Most engineers wait a career for the chance to be Engineer of Record on 345kV infrastructure. Here, it's the job description. Our client — a rapidly scaling clean energy innovator — is looking for a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead substation and transmission-level design for industrial facilities driving America's energy transition. You'll take design packages from blank page to energized, with full ownership along the way.
Why You'll Love It
- Serious scale: Industrial substations from 69kV to 345kV, utility interconnections, and grid-scale battery storage
- Full ownership: Independent EOR authority from concept through commissioning
- Top-of-market compensation: $190K–$252.5K base
- Innovation on the side: Lead R&D into MV-DC distribution for next-generation BESS integration
What You'll Do
- Lead design of high voltage AC systems — industrial substations (69kV–345kV) and their integration with transmission lines and MV distribution
- Develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans
- Run grid simulation and stability studies (PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN OneLiner) plus short circuit, load flow, and arc flash analysis
- Partner with utilities and ISO/RTOs on interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance for renewable and BESS projects
- Develop SEL relay settings and evaluate HV equipment — switchgear, breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs/CTs, protection relays
- Lead NEC, IEEE, NESC, and NFPA code compliance reviews
- Support construction and commissioning teams with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
- Manage scope, schedule, budget, and cost estimates on your design packages
- Mentor junior engineers and develop team standards, workflows, and templates
What You'll Bring
- BS/MS in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
- Active PE (Nevada or reciprocity-eligible); NV and SC licensure within 2 months of start
- 10+ years of high voltage electrical design, EPC background preferred
- Advanced proficiency: PSSE/PSLF, PSCAD/EMTP, SEL AcSELerator, ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP/SKM, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam
- Bonus points: HVDC/converter station design, SCADA/substation automation, field commissioning experience
- A drive to build the infrastructure of a sustainable future
This is the role engineers talk about for the rest of their careers. Apply now.
