Yard Manager – Wholesale Plant Nursery

Job Type: Full-Time
Annual Salary: $80,000
Location: Mecca, CA

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Yard Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of a large-scale, 100-acre wholesale plant nursery. This position is responsible for overseeing nursery production, plant health and quality, irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease management, inventory, labor, equipment, scheduling, safety, and overall yard operations.

The Yard Manager will play a key leadership role in maintaining operational excellence, ensuring consistent plant quality, improving productivity, controlling costs, and supporting the company's continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

Nursery Operations & Production

Lead and oversee daily operations across a 100-acre wholesale nursery, ensuring efficient, organized, and productive use of labor, materials, equipment, and growing space.
Establish, implement, and maintain high nursery production and quality standards.
Monitor plant health and growing conditions and identify and resolve issues involving irrigation, fertilization, plant nutrition, pests, diseases, weeds, pruning, and spacing.
Develop and maintain accurate production forecasts and schedules to support sales and operational requirements.
Optimize production processes to improve plant quality, minimize waste, maximize available inventory, and ensure products are ready for shipment according to schedule.
Coordinate plant movement, spacing, pruning, maintenance, and other production activities to maintain quality and maximize nursery capacity.

Team Leadership & Workforce Management

Lead, train, and supervise nursery employees while maintaining a professional, productive, and team-oriented work environment.
Determine staffing requirements and participate in hiring and onboarding employees as needed.
Develop daily and weekly work schedules based on production priorities and business requirements.
Establish clear expectations and hold team members accountable for productivity, quality, safety, and proper work practices.
Support employee development through training, coaching, and ongoing performance management.

Inventory, Orders & Shipping

Maintain accurate plant and material inventory records and ensure production information is current and reliable.
Communicate real-time inventory, production status, plant availability, and scheduling information to sales and management.
Ensure customer orders are accurately picked, staged, inspected, and prepared for loading.
Oversee truck loading and unloading operations while verifying quantities and inspecting incoming plant material for quality and condition.
Coordinate with management regarding appropriate storage and placement of incoming material.
Ensure shipments are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.

Equipment & Maintenance

Oversee the proper operation, maintenance, and servicing of nursery equipment, including forklifts, loaders, tractors, irrigation equipment, and other operational machinery.
Ensure equipment is maintained in safe working condition and that necessary repairs or preventative maintenance are addressed promptly.
Promote proper equipment use and ensure employees are trained on applicable machinery and operating procedures.

Cost & Business Management

Effectively manage labor, materials, equipment, production schedules, and operating costs.
Monitor productivity and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
Support company revenue and profitability objectives through effective production planning, inventory management, and operational execution.
Provide management with accurate information regarding production capacity, labor requirements, inventory, and operational needs.
Work closely with sales and management to align nursery production with customer demand and business objectives.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and professional working environment for employees and customers.
Enforce company safety policies and procedures, including proper equipment operation, PPE requirements, and safe work practices.
Ensure operations comply with applicable OSHA requirements and company safety standards.
Stay current with pesticide application, handling, storage, and worker protection requirements.
Ensure production employees receive appropriate training and comply with applicable pesticide regulations and Worker Protection Standards.
Promote a strong culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the nursery.

Additional Responsibilities

Perform other duties and operational responsibilities as assigned by management.
Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to the long-term growth and development of nursery operations.

Required Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of professional experience in nursery production, horticulture, agriculture, landscaping, or a related field.
Strong working knowledge of:
- Irrigation systems and management
- Fertilization and plant nutrition
- Pruning and plant maintenance
- Pest and disease identification and management
- Weed management
- Plant health and quality control
Demonstrated ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve common plant-health and production issues.
Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to effectively manage employees, schedules, production priorities, and operational deadlines.
Ability to operate, oversee, or effectively understand nursery equipment and machinery.
Ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Strong attention to detail with a commitment to plant quality, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or Associate degree (A.S.) in Horticulture, Agriculture, Plant Science, or a related field preferred.
Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills preferred.
Previous experience managing a large-scale nursery, agricultural operation, production facility, or similar outdoor operation is highly desirable.
Experience with production forecasting, inventory management, labor planning, and cost control is a plus.
