Immediate opening for an SMT In-Process AOI Inspector I in Brea, CA who possesses:

  • 3+ years of PCBA or electronic manufacturing experience
  • Experience operating Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) equipment
  • IPC-A-610 knowledge; current or expired certification preferred
  • SMT and Through-Hole inspection experience
  • Microscope inspection experience
  • Blueprint, engineering drawing, specification, and PCB Gerber reading experience
  • Component identification and workmanship inspection experience
  • 1+ year of experience within a regulated manufacturing environment such as ISO 9001, AS9100, or ISO 13485


FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking an SMT In-Process AOI Inspector I to perform visual, electrical, and dimensional inspection of printed circuit board assemblies within a fast-paced electronics manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for setting up and operating 2D Automated Optical Inspection equipment, completing First Article and in-process inspections, monitoring production runs, verifying workmanship against engineering documentation and IPC standards, and communicating defects to Production for timely correction. The ideal candidate will have strong PCBA manufacturing experience, hands-on AOI equipment experience, IPC-A-610 knowledge, and excellent component identification and inspection skills.


The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Setting up and operating 2D Automated Optical Inspection equipment
  • Performing AOI inspection during First Article, in-process, and production-run activities
  • Monitoring SMT production lines and inspection operations
  • Performing visual and dimensional inspections of printed circuit board assemblies
  • Inspecting workmanship against manufacturing travelers, engineering drawings, Bills of Material, work instructions, process specifications, and customer requirements
  • Applying IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 Class 2 requirements during inspection activities
  • Inspecting SMT and Through-Hole components and workmanship
  • Using microscopes and AOI equipment to identify defects and workmanship concerns
  • Using smart tweezers, calipers, pin gauges, and other precision measuring instruments
  • Verifying electrical and dimensional requirements during First Article and in-process inspections
  • Identifying defects not captured by AOI equipment
  • Communicating uncaptured defects to appropriate personnel to improve AOI program integrity
  • Communicating inspection defects to assembly operators so corrections can be implemented quickly
  • Performing and documenting First Article Inspections
  • Performing and documenting in-process inspections of electronic assemblies
  • Entering inspection results into applicable databases and quality systems
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and PCB Gerber files
  • Identifying electronic components, part numbers, values, orientation, and workmanship requirements
  • Measuring resistors and capacitors as required
  • Following proper Electrostatic Discharge handling requirements for electronic components
  • Following applicable ESD procedures throughout inspection activities
  • Properly handling and disposing of production and hazardous waste generated during daily operations
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work area
  • Following Foreign Object Debris prevention and 6S practices
  • Reviewing procedures, instructions, operating manuals, safety rules, and department reports
  • Working closely with Production, Quality, Engineering, and other departments to resolve inspection issues
  • Supporting fast-paced electro-mechanical production operations
  • Performing other duties as assigned


The selected candidate will also possess:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 3+ years of electronic manufacturing experience required
  • PCBA or EMS manufacturing experience required
  • Experience operating Automated Optical Inspection equipment required
  • Knowledge of AOI inspection procedures required
  • 1+ year of experience in an ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 13485, or similar regulated manufacturing environment required
  • IPC-A-610 knowledge required
  • IPC-A-610 CIS certification preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of J-STD-001 standards required
  • SMT inspection experience required
  • Through-Hole inspection experience required
  • Microscope inspection experience required
  • Strong component identification skills required
  • Ability to identify electronic component orientation and distinguish part numbers required
  • Ability to read component values by inspecting parts required
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and PCB Gerber files required
  • Ability to interpret engineering documentation and work instructions required
  • Experience using smart tweezers, calipers, pin gauges, or similar precision measuring equipment preferred
  • Ability to electrically measure resistors and capacitors required
  • Experience performing First Article Inspections preferred
  • Experience performing in-process inspection preferred
  • Strong understanding of ESD handling requirements required
  • General understanding of FOD and 6S preferred
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook proficiency preferred
  • Adobe proficiency preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English at a general business level
  • Ability to read and interpret procedures, instructions, operating manuals, and safety rules
  • Ability to analyze problems and manage multiple written and verbal priorities
  • Strong attention to detail required
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work independently and within a fast-paced production environment
  • Ability to successfully complete required pre-employment drug and background screening
  • Ability to work onsite in Brea, CA
  • Ability to work either first shift from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM or second shift from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM
  • Ability to work overtime as required based on production needs
  • Ability to support a temp-to-hire opportunity


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, talk, and hear throughout the workday
  • Ability to move throughout production and inspection areas to collect samples and communicate with production personnel
  • Manual dexterity required to operate AOI and other inspection equipment
  • Ability to use hands and fingers for handling PCBAs, electronic components, inspection tools, documentation, and computer systems
  • Ability to visually inspect electronic components, solder workmanship, PCBAs, and production assemblies
  • Must possess 20/20 visual acuity with or without corrective lenses
  • Color vision required
  • Ability to review blueprints, drawings, Gerber files, specifications, inspection records, and computer screens for extended periods
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move more than 15 pounds as required
  • Ability to work near moving mechanical equipment and hot parts
  • Ability to work in a production environment with moderate noise levels
  • Ability to wear required PPE and follow applicable ESD, manufacturing, quality, and safety procedures
  • Ability to maintain focus, accuracy, and attention to detail throughout repetitive precision inspection activities


Salary Range: $24 to $30/hour
