Job Description

The Master Technician will perform advanced diagnosis, repair, and maintenance on electric, hybrid, and conventional vehicles in a high-standard service environment. This role focuses on accurately identifying and resolving vehicle malfunctions using schematics and diagnostic equipment, ensuring all work meets manufacturer and company specifications. The technician will play a key role in supporting electric vehicle service operations, documenting all work performed, and collaborating closely with the parts department and shop leadership to deliver safe, reliable vehicles to customers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic and repair work on electric, hybrid, and regular vehicles with a high level of accuracy and efficiency in accordance with company and manufacturer standards.
  • Review and follow repair orders, ensuring all requested work is completed correctly and within the promised timeframe.
  • Diagnose the cause of malfunctions using schematics, technical documentation, and diagnostic equipment, and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Communicate with the parts department to identify, request, and obtain all necessary parts for repairs.
  • Save and tag parts from repair jobs when work is under warranty or when requested by the technical team, following established procedures.
  • Examine assigned vehicles for additional safety or service needs and clearly recommend further work when appropriate.
  • Inform the shop foreman promptly if additional work is required, if work outlined on the repair order is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed as promised.
  • Document all work performed, findings, and recommended services thoroughly and accurately on the work order.
  • Road test vehicles when required to verify repairs and ensure proper performance, or coordinate with the shop foreman to complete road tests.
  • Stay current with manufacturer technical bulletins, recalls, and updates related to electric, hybrid, and conventional vehicles.
  • Supervise and support other technicians by providing guidance, mentorship, and training on maintenance processes and protocols.
  • Train newer technicians on proper maintenance procedures, diagnostic approaches, and safety practices for electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Maintain accountability for all company-owned tools, equipment, and manuals, ensuring they are returned to the proper place and kept in good condition.
  • Interact professionally with customers when required, presenting a knowledgeable and approachable demeanor that instills confidence in the service provided.
  • Support a 24/7 service operation by being open to working weekends and assigned shifts, including B shift coverage.
  • Contribute to building and refining processes in a new service operation, helping establish best practices from the ground up.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience working with electric vehicles (EV), including diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an automotive mechanic or technician working on a variety of vehicle platforms.
  • Master-level technician experience with advanced proficiency in automotive diagnostics and repair.
  • Electric Vehicle certification from ASE or an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
  • Possession of at least 4 ASE certifications and the willingness and ability to obtain additional ASE certifications within 1 year.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, including experience with electrical wiring, fuses, and EV systems.
  • Demonstrated experience performing EV and hybrid vehicle maintenance safely and accurately.
  • Prior experience training and mentoring newer technicians on maintenance processes and protocols.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, technical manuals, and manufacturer bulletins.
  • Proficient use of diagnostic equipment and tools in an automotive service environment.
  • Professional customer-facing skills, with the ability to present a polished, reliable image to clients and their customers.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation of all work performed.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, 24/7 service operation and meet performance expectations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • ASE Certified Automotive Technician with multiple ASE certifications, including EV-related credentials.
  • Experience as a master technician in environments servicing electric, hybrid, and conventional vehicles.
  • Background in automotive electrical systems, including wiring, diagnostics, and fuse-related troubleshooting.
  • Experience supervising other technicians and providing ongoing guidance and mentorship.
  • Comfort working with technical bulletins, recalls, and evolving manufacturer requirements.
  • Ability to adapt to new processes and help build operational standards in a newly established service center.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with parts departments, shop leadership, and customers.
  • Willingness to work B shift from afternoon to late evening, Monday through Friday, and openness to weekend work as needed.

Work Environment

This role is based in a modern, air-conditioned service shop that operates with 24/7 coverage to support a dynamic vehicle fleet. You will work with advanced diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, and tools tailored for electric, hybrid, and conventional vehicle maintenance. The opportunity involves contributing to a brand-new service operation, helping to build processes and standards from the ground up in a professional and collaborative setting. The primary schedule is B shift, running from the afternoon into late evening Monday through Friday, with the expectation of being open to weekend work to support full coverage. Dress code includes pants or jeans, safety shoes, and a plain shirt, reflecting a practical and safety-focused environment. When travel is required, hotel stays and daily food and beverage per diem are reimbursed, and flights are provided, ensuring a well-supported work experience both on-site and on the road.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Francisco, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $57.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
