Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) / Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Addiction Medicine
Location: Glen Ellen, CA
Setting: Residential Detox Treatment Center with Outpatient Services
Schedule: Full-Time Preferred; Part-Time May Be Considered
Employment Type: W-2 Employee
Salary: $175,000–$195,000 per year, dependent on experience
Avento Health has partnered with a leading substance use disorder treatment center in Northern California to identify a Nurse Practitioner for an on-site W-2 opportunity in Glen Ellen, CA. This role is ideal for a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with addiction medicine, detox, medication-assisted treatment, and dual-diagnosis experience. Family Nurse Practitioners with strong substance use disorder or behavioral health experience are also encouraged to apply.
The Nurse Practitioner will support adults receiving care in a structured residential detox and treatment environment, with additional involvement in outpatient services. This position focuses on medical assessments, withdrawal management support, medication management, medication-assisted treatment, and care for clients with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions.
What You’ll Do
- Complete medical evaluations for new admissions, including history, physical assessment, review of labs, and toxicology results.
- Assess and manage acute and chronic medical concerns commonly seen in substance use disorder and detox populations.
- Prescribe and manage medication-assisted treatment when clinically appropriate, including medications such as buprenorphine/Suboxone, naltrexone/Vivitrol, and other appropriate treatment options.
- Initiate, monitor, and adjust psychiatric medications for clients with co-occurring mental health conditions when within scope and clinically indicated.
- Provide clinical support and oversight for withdrawal management protocols in a residential detox setting.
- Monitor medication response, side effects, adherence, and overall clinical progress.
- Collaborate closely with counselors, therapists, nursing staff, consulting physicians, and leadership as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
- Participate in clinical rounds, case conferences, and treatment planning discussions to support continuity of care.
- Coordinate referrals to specialty care, emergency care, or higher levels of care when clinically appropriate.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the EMR.
- Follow applicable clinical, regulatory, DEA, and documentation standards.
What a Typical Day May Include
- Conducting 1–3 intake assessments for new clients.
- Providing follow-up medication management visits for residential and/or outpatient clients.
- Reviewing labs, toxicology results, withdrawal symptoms, and medication response.
- Adjusting treatment plans in collaboration with the clinical team.
- Joining team check-ins, rounds, or weekly case conferences.
- Responding to urgent clinical concerns in a residential detox setting.
- Completing EMR documentation, orders, medication changes, and care coordination.
Requirements
- Active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
- Board certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
- PMHNP strongly preferred.
- FNP candidates will be considered with strong addiction medicine, substance use disorder, detox, behavioral health, or primary care experience with SUD populations.
- Active DEA license, or ability to obtain immediately.
- Experience treating clients with substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, or complex behavioral health needs.
- Comfort prescribing and managing medication-assisted treatment when clinically appropriate.
- Comfort managing common psychiatric medications for co-occurring anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma-related symptoms, and other behavioral health presentations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary residential treatment environment.
- Strong documentation habits and a compliance-minded clinical approach.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in residential detox, residential substance use treatment, or outpatient addiction treatment.
- Experience working with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorder populations.
- Experience with withdrawal management, medication-assisted treatment, and relapse prevention planning.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care and harm-reduction principles.
- ASAM training, addiction medicine training, or willingness to complete ASAM-related training within the first 6 months.
- AB 890 103 NP status or eligibility strongly preferred.
- Experience practicing with a high degree of clinical independence in a group or team-based setting.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a clinically confident PMHNP or experienced Nurse Practitioner who understands the medical and psychiatric complexity of substance use disorder treatment. This person should be comfortable working with adults in early recovery, managing medications thoughtfully, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and responding to clinical needs in a residential detox environment. The strongest candidates will bring direct experience in addiction medicine, dual diagnosis, detox, MAT, or psychiatric care for individuals with substance use conditions.
