Temporary Assistant Biologist 1 with a Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region

Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year

Role Overview
The Assistant Biologist I is an entry‐level professional biologist role responsible for supporting ecological investigations, biological monitoring, and field surveys related to fisheries, wildlife, wetlands, flora, and habitats. The role works under immediate supervision and is designed for individuals with limited prior professional biologist experience, emphasizing learning, field execution, and data support activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct fieldwork for biological data collection and analysis, including fisheries monitoring, wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, and botanical surveys.
- Assist with annual fisheries sampling, such as electrofishing, PIT antenna maintenance, spawning surveys, and fish habitat evaluations.
- Support pre ‐ project biological surveys, including nesting bird surveys, rare plant surveys, and identification of sensitive habitats or communities.
- Collect, record, summarize, and help analyze ecological and environmental data in accordance with BMPs and QA/QC standards.
- Assist in preparing biological data summaries, reports, and documentation.
- Maintain and organize biological field equipment, including inspection, cleaning, and basic maintenance.
- Perform related ecological and field support duties as assigned while following all applicable safety policies and procedures.
Required Experience
Required:
- One (1) year of professional‐level biologist experience involving a significant amount of field work.
- A Master's degree in a life sciences field (biology, ecology, botany, zoology, or related) may substitute for the required experience.
Preferred:
- Hands‐on experience with fish and wildlife monitoring techniques, such as:

- Electrofishing
- PIT antenna installation and maintenance
- Spawning surveys
- Fish habitat evaluation
- Bird surveys
- Familiarity with local flora and fauna, particularly within Santa Clara County
- Prior exposure to ecological fieldwork, environmental monitoring, or biological survey projects.
Required Skills
Technical Skills
- Biological data collection, recording, and basic statistical analysis.
- Use of biological field equipment for sampling, monitoring, and habitat assessment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic database systems.
- Ability to learn and apply:

- Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- CEQA and NEPA fundamentals
- GPS, GIS, and mapping tools (introductory level)
- QA/QC procedures for biological data.
- Basic technical and scientific writing skills.
Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail in field data collection and documentation.
- Ability to follow explicit instructions and work effectively under close supervision.
- Willingness and ability to learn new field techniques, regulations, and tools.
- Clear written and verbal communication for reporting observations and findings.
- Physical stamina and adaptability to outdoor field conditions and variable work environments.
- Team‐oriented mindset with the ability to also work independently in the field when required.
Education / Certifications
Education (Required):
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in:

- Valid California Driver's License may be required when driving is an essential function of the assignment.
