Job DescriptionJob Title: Lab Assistant Certified Phlebotomy Technician (Full-Time, In-Patient)Job Description

This full-time Lab Assistant and Certified Phlebotomy Technician role focuses on providing high-quality phlebotomy and specimen processing services in a fast-paced inpatient environment. You will perform venipunctures on adults and pediatric patients, micro-collections on infants, and support laboratory operations through accurate data entry and specimen handling. Working closely with clinical laboratory scientists and leadership, you will help ensure timely, reliable laboratory results and deliver excellent customer service to patients, clinicians, and internal clients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures on adult and pediatric patients in an inpatient setting, following established phlebotomy protocols and safety standards.
  • Perform micro-collections on infants, including heel sticks and other appropriate techniques, ensuring patient comfort and specimen integrity.
  • Carry out special phlebotomy procedures such as blood cultures, finger sticks, and other ordered collections with precision and adherence to guidelines.
  • Process laboratory specimens, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, and preparing samples for analysis or transport according to laboratory procedures.
  • Participate in data entry by accurately entering patient, test, and specimen information into the laboratory information system using computer input terminals.
  • Communicate promptly and professionally with clinicians, nursing staff, and other clients to clarify orders, resolve specimen concerns, and ensure proper handling and routing of samples.
  • Follow instructions and work under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, Assistant Director, and/or Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientists, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records related to phlebotomy procedures, specimen processing, and any issues encountered during collection.
  • Deliver excellent customer service by interacting courteously and empathetically with patients, families, and colleagues, and by explaining procedures as needed.
  • Support daily workflow in both the patient care areas (on the floor doing draws) and the laboratory, adjusting tasks as workload and priorities change.
  • Adhere to all infection control, safety, and quality assurance procedures while handling specimens and working in clinical areas.
  • Assist with general laboratory duties and perform other related tasks as assigned to support efficient and effective lab operations.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture, blood cultures, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
  • Experience performing micro-collections on infants and blood draws on pediatric and adult patients in a clinical or hospital setting.
  • 12 years of experience as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) in a hospital setting, or comparable experience in a reference laboratory.
  • Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certificate.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Working knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology relevant to phlebotomy and specimen processing.
  • Ability to operate computer input terminals and perform accurate data entry in a laboratory information system.
  • Typing and word processing skills sufficient for efficient and accurate documentation.
  • Strong communication skills, including fluency in English, to interact with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory colleagues.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to handle patient interactions professionally and compassionately.
  • Ability to work effectively under supervision of laboratory leadership and clinical laboratory scientists.
  • Willingness and ability to work rotating weekends and holidays, and to flex between AM and PM shifts as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience performing laboratory assays and working in a clinical laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Experience in inpatient phlebotomy and specimen processing is highly beneficial.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and workloads.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, handling, and documentation.
  • Ability to adapt to different schedules and shifts, including early morning and evening hours.
  • Demonstrated reliability and professionalism in a healthcare or laboratory setting.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, 40+ hours per week position in a fast-paced inpatient laboratory environment. You will work both on the patient care floors performing blood draws and in the laboratory processing specimens, contributing to a close-knit and collaborative team. The role operates under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, Assistant Director, and Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientists. The schedule requires flexibility: you will primarily work the AM shift (approximately 4:00 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.) and/or the PM shift (approximately 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.), depending on operational needs. You will work every other weekend, as well as one minor holiday and one major holiday. Training takes place Monday through Friday; after successful completion of training, you will rotate between shifts as needed. Schedules are posted two weeks in advance to support planning. The environment involves frequent patient contact, computer-based data entry, and handling of biological specimens, with a strong emphasis on safety, accuracy, teamwork, and professional conduct, including appropriate clinical attire consistent with a hospital laboratory setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Covina, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $27.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
