Job Description

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Industrial Machinist to support our plastic manufacturing operations. In this role, you will manufacture, modify, repair, and maintain precision tooling, injection molds, extrusion dies, and production machinery components. The ideal candidate possesses deep mechanical expertise, hands-on experience with both manual and CNC equipment, and a strong understanding of machining polymers as well as tool steels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mold & Tooling Repair: Inspect, troubleshoot, disassemble, repair, and refurbish multi-cavity injection molds, blow molds, or extrusion dies to ensure minimal line downtime.
  • Machining Operations: Set up and operate manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, CNC mills, and wire/sinker EDMs to machine tool steel, aluminum, beryllium copper, and industrial plastics (e.g., Delrin, UHMW, PEEK, Nylon).
  • Equipment Maintenance: Manufacture replacement machine components (shafts, bushings, core pins, ejector plates, nozzle tips) according to engineering drawings and tight tolerances ($\pm 0.0005\text{"}$).
  • Blueprint Reading & CAM: Read complex engineering blueprints, CAD models, and G-code. Modify existing CAD/CAM programs at the control panel or workstation as needed.
  • Quality Assurance: Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, optical comparators) to inspect replacement parts and tool tooling surfaces before installation.
  • Continuous Improvement & Safety: Collaborate with process engineers and mold technicians to modify tooling for improved cycle times and part release. Maintain a clean workspace adhering to OSHA and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or GED; completion of a formal machinist apprenticeship or associate degree in Machine Tool Technology is highly preferred.
  • 3+ years of machinist experience within a plastics manufacturing environment (injection molding, extrusion, or thermoforming).
  • Proven expertise in machining both tool steels (P20, H13, S7) and engineering plastics, understanding material deformation, thermal expansion, and chip load.
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems used in plastic processing machinery.
  • Advanced proficiency in manual machining, CNC setup/operation, and precision measuring.
  • Ability to troubleshoot core pin wear, flashing, ejection issues, and gate wear on active tooling.
