Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and safety-minded Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to perform vital mechanical repairs, installations, and preventative/corrective maintenance for our yard facilities, utilities, and heavy production equipment.In this role, you will utilize your mechanical expertise across multiple systems—including shipyard infrastructure, production machinery, rolling stock, HVAC, diesel engines, conveyance systems, and automated equipment. If you thrive in a dynamic, heavy industrial environment and take pride in keeping production moving safely, we want you on our team.
Essential Job Tasks

  • Inspect & Diagnose: Conduct routine inspections of equipment to ensure safe, reliable operations and utilize mechanical knowledge to quickly diagnose system failures.
  • Repair & Maintain: Perform equipment servicing, repairs, and preventative maintenance using test equipment, hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized power tools.
  • Utility & Structural Support: Perform targeted installations, repairs, and maintenance on all utility distribution networks, buildings, structures, and portable production support equipment throughout the shipyard facilities.
  • Documentation: Accurately fill out required reports and operational documentation, including work orders, inspection forms, discrepancy sheets, logbooks, and service forms.
  • Safety & Compliance: Strictly adhere to energy recognition, personal protective equipment (PPE), and lock/tag out (LOTO) procedures.
  • General Duties: Maintain general safety awareness, participate in safety/process improvement meetings, and keep work areas clean and orderly.


Qualification StandardsEducation & Experience

  • Required: High school diploma (or equivalent) AND a trade school certificate in mechanical training OR equivalent hands-on work experience performing industrial mechanical repairs.
  • Preferred: Specialized training (e.g., diesel engines, automated equipment) and/or equivalent experience maintaining and diagnosing systems in a heavy production or shipyard environment.

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to read and comprehend complex schematics, diagrams, piping plans, and manufacturer-supplied documentation.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring equipment (tape measures, rulers, dial indicators, calipers, depth/feeler gauges).
  • Experience with basic hand tools and specialized mechanical tools (gear pullers, hydraulic jacks, torque wrenches, impact wrenches).
  • Desirable Extras: Precision measurement/alignment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, engine repair/overhaul, equipment operation, and fabrication using cutting torches.

Physical & Shift Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be able to navigate the yard following maps and traffic rules.
  • Ability to work in varied whole-body positions, at heights, and within confined spaces with limited visibility.
  • Flexibility to work any shift as required by shipyard production demands.
  • Ability to understand written/verbal instructions, read safety warnings, and clearly hear yard warning signals.

Physical Demands & Environmental Factors

  • Physical Involvement: Requires regular lifting/carrying of up to 60 lbs. unassisted (and up to 100 lbs. assisted). Involves prolonged walking, climbing, standing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and crawling across all areas of the shipyard.
  • Environmental Conditions: Works outdoors more than 50% of the time with constant exposure to varying weather (wind, heat, water). Work is performed around automated machinery, high noise levels, vibrations, and in environments that may include dust, fumes, gases, or low ventilation. All required PPE must be worn at all times.
