Lead Building Engineer, HVAC
Job Description
Job Description
Join a team at the intersection of exceptional veterinary care and social change.
At the San Francisco SPCA, we believe every pet deserves compassionate, high-quality veterinary care—no matter their guardian’s financial situation. As a nonprofit, we break down barriers to care by offering financial assistance and individualized medical support to thousands of animals each year. Our work doesn’t serve shareholders—it serves pets, people, and the community.
We are seeking an experienced Lead Building Engineer Technician with strong HVAC expertise to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across our facilities. We're looking for a hands-on expert who can diagnose complex problems, keep equipment running reliably, and take the lead on HVAC repairs and preventative maintenance. You'll also support general building maintenance, coordinate contractors, and provide technical guidance to other maintenance technicians.
This organization isn’t just about treating patients—it’s about caring for animals, supporting people, and strengthening community.
What You’ll Do
- Own HVAC maintenance and repairs: Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair commercial HVAC systems, controls, and related mechanical equipment.
- Keep equipment running: Perform preventative maintenance, inspect systems, identify problems early, and recommend repairs or improvements.
- Handle complex issues: Investigate recurring equipment failures and determine the best long-term solutions.
- Support other building systems: Perform general maintenance and repairs involving plumbing, electrical, and other mechanical and building systems.
- Coordinate contractors: Oversee outside vendors performing HVAC service, repairs, and inspections.
- Lead by example: Provide hands-on guidance to maintenance technicians and help establish maintenance procedures and best practices.
- Keep our facilities safe: Follow safety procedures, maintain service records, and help ensure our buildings remain safe and operational.
What You’ll Bring
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience in commercial HVAC, building engineering, or facilities maintenance, with demonstrated HVAC expertise.
- Strong troubleshooting and repair skills across commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and mechanical systems.
- Experience with preventative maintenance, HVAC controls, and diagnosing equipment problems.
- Working knowledge of general building maintenance, including plumbing and electrical systems.
- At least 2 years of experience leading, mentoring, or training maintenance team members.
- Experience coordinating contractors and maintaining service records.
- Valid California Driver’s License and insurable driving record.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize repairs, and communicate effectively with staff and vendors.
- Willingness to work in an environment with animals.
Preferred Qualifications
- EPA Section 608 certification or other relevant HVAC trade certifications.
- Experience with commercial boilers, chillers, and building automation systems.
- Experience in a multi-building or high-demand facility.
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Proficiency with work-order software, such as Jira.
- Availability to work Thursday–Monday.
