JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for setting up, operating, programming, and maintaining CNC and manual machine tools to produce high-quality, precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and production requirements. Operates vertical machining centers (VMCs), turning centers, and manual equipment; performs turning, drilling, milling, and other machining operations.

The CNC Machinist is responsible for machine setup, tool selection and management, tool offset adjustments, speeds and feeds, program editing, inspection, troubleshooting, fixture design and fabrication, and continuous improvement of machining processes. Advanced-level machinists may utilize CAM software and machine controls to develop CNC programs, coordinate production activities, maintain tooling and shop supplies, and train and mentor other machinists.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Load, unload, set up, and operate CNC machines, including VMCs and turning centers.
  • Set up and operate manual machines and basic shop equipment, including drill presses, saws, belt sanders, and other hand tools.
  • Perform progressive turning, drilling, milling, and related machining operations.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, workholding, materials, and machining methods to meet production and quality requirements.
  • Adjust tool offsets and compensate for tool wear.
  • Adjust speeds and feeds based on material type, tooling, and machining requirements.
  • Edit CNC programs at the machine control as necessary to make dimensional, tooling, and process adjustments.
  • Apply knowledge of G & M codes for machine setup, MDI operations, and basic program editing.
  • Program CNC machines utilizing machine controls and CAM software, as required by skill level.
  • Design, build, and modify fixtures used for production and inspection processes.
  • Perform first-article, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring equipment, including calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation.
  • Ensure parts conform to dimensional, cosmetic, and surface-finish requirements.
  • Inspect parts for dimensional accuracy, tool distortion, shape, finish, and other quality characteristics.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving tooling, materials, programs, equipment, fixtures, and part specifications.
  • Manage cutting-tool life and make adjustments to maximize tool performance and product quality.
  • Maintain CNC machines, manual equipment, and coolant systems.
  • Perform deburring and finishing operations using hand tools, belt sanders, drill presses, and other appropriate equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of cutting tools, tooling, and normal machine-shop supplies.
  • Participate in production planning and scheduling activities, including prioritizing work orders and distributing work based on production requirements, as applicable.
  • Meet or exceed established production goals and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Utilize Lean principles and continuous-improvement practices to improve safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and cost.
  • Train and mentor less-experienced machinists in machine operation, setup, inspection, tooling, and safe work practices.
  • Promote teamwork and effective communication across departments.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience operating CNC machine tools, manual machines, or related manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Ability to understand and follow specifications and quality requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate basic shop equipment.
  • Experience level may vary based on assigned machinist level.

Progressive Experience Requirements

Machinist I

  • Minimal experience operating CNC machines or related manufacturing equipment.
  • Basic understanding of CNC machine operation.
  • Basic experience with calipers and micrometers.
  • Blueprint reading is a plus.

Machinist II

  • Approximately 2?5 years of machinist experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience setting up and operating CNC machines.
  • Experience setting up and operating manual machines.
  • Experience making tool-offset adjustments.
  • Knowledge of speeds and feeds based on tooling and material selection.
  • Familiarity with basic G & M codes and MDI operations.
  • Familiarity with inspection requirements, specifications, tolerances, and surface imperfections.

Machinist III

  • Minimum 5 years of CNC setup and operating experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with CAM software or equivalent CNC programming experience.
  • Experience working with a variety of metals and other machining materials.
  • Advanced knowledge of tooling, tool selection, and machining processes.
  • Experience designing and building production and inspection fixtures.
  • Experience with CNC programming and machine-control programming.
  • Experience with quality processes and implementation.
  • Experience training and mentoring other machinists.
  • Experience participating in production planning and scheduling is preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a Machinist Apprenticeship Program.
  • Completion of CNC machining or CNC programming training.
  • CNC programming certification.
  • Experience with multiple CNC controls and CAM software platforms.
  • Blueprint reading and GD&T experience.
  • Experience with fixture design and fabrication.
  • Experience with production planning, scheduling, and KPI-driven manufacturing.
  • Experience training or mentoring other machinists.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to continuously lift, push, pull, bend, stoop, twist, reach, grasp, grip, walk, and stand.
  • Ability to occasionally squat.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements associated with operating machinery and handling materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Indoor manufacturing environment with exposure to cold, heat, dust, fumes, airborne particles, machinery, moving equipment, and minimal to moderate noise levels.
  • Work may involve exposure to metal chips, cutting fluids, lubricants, and other materials associated with machining operations.
  • Required personal protective equipment may include safety glasses, hearing protection, protective footwear, and gloves.
  • Additional protective equipment may be required depending on the task or job duty performed.

SALARY RANGE

Machinist I: $22?$28 per hour

Machinist II: $27?$33 per hour

Machinist III: $31?$45 per hour
