Vallejo Grocery Outlet is seeking a dependable, motivated, and hands-on Closing Manager to lead evening store operations.
The Closing Manager is responsible for maintaining store standards, supervising employees, delivering excellent customer service, ensuring operational efficiency, and preparing the store for a successful opening the following morning.
This position requires a leader who takes ownership of store conditions, holds employees accountable, and works alongside the team to accomplish daily priorities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership & Team Management
- Serve as Manager on Duty during assigned closing shifts.
- Direct, supervise, and support cashiers, stockers, and other evening employees.
- Assign tasks and establish clear priorities at the beginning of each shift.
- Monitor employee productivity and ensure assigned work is completed.
- Coach employees on performance, customer service, and store procedures.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and productive working environment.
- Communicate staffing, performance, and operational concerns to ownership.
2. Store Recovery & Merchandising
- Ensure the sales floor is clean, organized, fully recovered, and ready for customers.
- Direct evening stocking and replenishment of merchandise.
- Prioritize high-volume departments, promotional displays, and empty shelves.
- Ensure endcaps, promotional displays, and key selling areas are maintained.
- Verify merchandise is properly priced and displayed.
- Ensure freight, backstock, and warehouse areas are safely organized.
- Establish an efficient evening workflow that maximizes stocking and recovery.
3. Customer Service
- Maintain a welcoming and customer-focused shopping environment.
- Respond promptly and professionally to customer questions, complaints, and concerns.
- Assist cashiers with overrides, returns, and register issues within company policy.
- Monitor checkout lines and adjust staffing to minimize customer wait times.
- Model excellent customer service and hold employees accountable to the same standards.
4. Cash Handling & Front-End Operations
- Oversee front-end operations during the closing shift.
- Ensure register procedures and cash-handling policies are followed.
- Complete required cash accountability, register reconciliation, and closing paperwork.
- Investigate and report cash discrepancies.
- Ensure appropriate security procedures are followed for cash, deposits, and store funds.
5. Store Cleanliness, Safety & Security
- Complete nightly store closing and security procedures.
- Inspect the sales floor, restrooms, receiving areas, and warehouse for cleanliness and safety.
- Ensure spills, hazards, and unsafe conditions are addressed immediately.
- Verify equipment, doors, alarms, and other required security measures are properly secured.
- Follow company procedures for theft prevention, incidents, and emergencies.
- Ensure employees follow food safety and workplace safety standards.
6. Operational Efficiency & Accountability
- Organize evening workloads to maximize productivity.
- Monitor progress throughout the shift and redirect employees as necessary.
- Ensure available labor hours are used effectively.
- Minimize unnecessary overtime.
- Support shrink reduction by identifying damages, improper handling, and preventable product loss.
- Communicate incomplete tasks, inventory concerns, and department needs to the opening management team.
Closing Shift Expectations
Before leaving each evening, the Closing Manager is accountable for ensuring:
- The sales floor is clean, faced, recovered, and customer-ready.
- Priority stocking and replenishment are completed.
- Promotional displays and endcaps are presentable.
- Checkout lanes and front-end areas are clean and organized.
- The warehouse and receiving areas are orderly and safe.
- Trash and required cleaning tasks are completed.
- Assigned employee tasks are verified.
- Cash-handling and closing paperwork are accurate.
- The building is secured according to company procedures.
- A clear shift handoff is provided to store management.
Qualifications
Required:
- Previous retail or grocery experience.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to supervise employees and hold team members accountable.
- Strong customer service and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to multitask and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of grocery retail, including prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting with appropriate assistance.
Preferred:
- At least 1–2 years of retail supervisory or management experience.
- Grocery store or high-volume retail experience.
- Familiarity with cash reconciliation, inventory control, merchandising, and loss prevention.
- Experience managing closing procedures and directing stocking crews.
