Job Summary
The Chief Engineer oversees the hotel’s Engineering and Maintenance operations, ensuring the property, building systems, equipment, and facilities are maintained safely, efficiently, and to luxury hospitality standards. This position leads the Engineering team, manages preventative maintenance, repairs, vendors, budgets, capital projects, and regulatory compliance while supporting an exceptional guest experience.
Responsibilities
Engineering & Maintenance
- Lead daily Engineering and Maintenance operations and assign priorities to the team.
- Maintain guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house areas, mechanical systems, equipment, and building infrastructure.
- Oversee HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, life-safety, and other critical systems.
- Implement and monitor preventative maintenance and work-order programs.
- Respond promptly to engineering emergencies, equipment failures, and guest concerns.
- Conduct regular property inspections and address deficiencies proactively.
Leadership & Operations
- Hire, train, coach, schedule, and manage Engineering team members.
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels and control labor costs.
- Establish standards for safety, productivity, workmanship, and guest service.
- Partner with hotel leadership and other departments to resolve operational and guest-related maintenance issues.
Budget, Vendors & Projects
- Manage the Engineering budget, expenses, purchasing, and inventory.
- Manage vendors, contractors, service agreements, inspections, and warranties.
- Support capital projects, renovations, major repairs, and property improvement initiatives.
- Monitor projects for quality, safety, budget, and timely completion.
- Identify opportunities for energy conservation, cost savings, and asset preservation.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable building, fire/life-safety, OSHA, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain required inspections, permits, certifications, and documentation.
- Support emergency preparedness and ensure critical safety systems are properly maintained.
- Promote a safe and professional working environment.
- Support other engineering initiatives assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, or Hospitality experience; hotel engineering leadership preferred.
- Previous Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, or Engineering Manager experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of building systems, preventative maintenance, safety, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience managing employees, budgets, vendors, contractors, and capital projects.
- Strong problem-solving, leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with CMMS/work-order systems and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work in guest areas, mechanical spaces, rooftops, kitchens, and back-of-house environments.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Flexible availability for emergencies, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
