Job Description

The Equipment Technician supports a special project to relocate and requalify manufacturing equipment from one facility to another. This role disconnects, moves, and reinstalls equipment in a new cleanroom, executes installation qualification procedures, and ensures proper utility, piping, and electrical connections. The technician also performs testing, troubleshooting, and calibration to confirm equipment readiness for laboratory and manufacturing operations, while maintaining accurate documentation in Microsoft Office, MES, and asset management systems.

Responsibilities

Disconnect, move, and reinstall manufacturing and laboratory equipment from one building to another, including setup in a new cleanroom environment.
Execute installation qualification procedures for equipment to ensure proper performance and compliance with established standards.
Set up valves, piping, and electrical connections to meet equipment specifications and ensure safe and reliable operation.
Follow all lockout/tagout procedures and safety protocols during equipment shutdown, movement, and installation activities.
Perform the physical relocation of tabletop and lab equipment such as hot plates, freezers, chambers, and ovens.
Work extensively with Microsoft Excel and the broader Microsoft Office suite to document activities, track progress, and support project reporting.
Read and interpret schematics, equipment manuals, diagrams, layouts, and written or verbal instructions to perform testing, checkout, and troubleshooting functions.
Conduct operational tests and fault isolation on systems and equipment to verify readiness for laboratory and manufacturing teams.
Perform equipment calibrations, alignments, and functional testing to maintain accuracy and reliability.
Carry out general maintenance tasks using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and measurement devices.
Execute material moves according to defined plans and milestone goals, ensuring proper handling and sequencing.
Update work status daily in MES and asset management systems to maintain accurate records of equipment moves, qualifications, and maintenance.
Work with pneumatic systems, electrical components, and programmable logic controllers as required for equipment setup and troubleshooting.
Adhere to GMP and biotechnology environment standards while performing all tasks.
Collaborate with project stakeholders to meet daily assigned work and milestone objectives.
Request assistance for any items requiring special movement or lifting beyond standard limits to ensure safe handling.

Essential Skills

2 to 4 years of experience as a maintenance or equipment technician in a manufacturing, GMP, biotechnology, or biomedical device environment.
Hands-on experience performing equipment setup, installation qualification, and requalification.
Proven experience with equipment calibrations, alignments, and functional testing.
Ability to read and interpret schematics, equipment manuals, diagrams, layouts, and written instructions.
Strong troubleshooting skills for systems and equipment, including fault isolation and operational testing.
Experience with utility setup and hook-ups for manufacturing equipment, including electrical and pneumatic connections.
Proficiency using multimeters, calipers, and other measurement tools for electrical and mechanical checks.
Comfort working with power tools and general maintenance tools for installation and repair tasks.
Ability to work in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office suite for documentation and reporting.
Experience updating and maintaining records in MES and asset management systems.
Understanding of lockout/tagout procedures and safe work practices around energized equipment.
Ability to move and handle equipment and components up to approximately 25 pounds safely.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience in biomedical device or biotechnology environments.
Experience working in a GMP-regulated setting.
Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in the context of equipment installation and troubleshooting.
Experience with pneumatic systems and related components.
Exposure to material movement and logistics within manufacturing or lab facilities.
Ability to follow detailed project plans and milestone schedules.
Willingness and flexibility to work overtime when needed to support project timelines.

Work Environment

This role is based in a clean, well-maintained biotech facility where equipment is being relocated between nearby buildings. Work is typically scheduled Monday through Friday, starting at 8:00 a.m., with overtime assigned as needed for project demands. The position involves regular movement of equipment and components up to about 25 pounds, with an expectation to request help for heavier or specialized moves to maintain safety. Work takes place in manufacturing and cleanroom areas, using standard maintenance tools, power tools, measurement devices, and computer systems including MES and asset management software. The environment emphasizes safe work practices, including lockout/tagout procedures and adherence to GMP standards, while providing access to onsite amenities such as cafeterias and break rooms.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of San Diego, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $31.25 - $31.25/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
