Position Summary
Santa Maria Post Acute is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Director of Staff Development (DSD) to lead our employee education and training initiatives. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs to ensure clinical competency, regulatory compliance, and a high standard of patient care in our 55-bed skilled nursing community.

Qualifications

Licensure: Must possess a valid, current California Nursing License. Registered Nurse (RN) is preferred, but a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) with strong leadership experience will be considered.

Experience:

Minimum of 2 years of experience as a licensed nurse.
At least 1 year of experience providing direct care to elderly or chronically ill patients in a long-term care or skilled nursing facility.

Certification: Must have a California Director of Staff Development (DSD) certification, or be willing to obtain it within the first six months of hire.

Education Competency: One year of experience in educational program planning or 24 hours of continuing education in planning and evaluating nursing education programs.

Key Responsibilities

Orientation & Onboarding: Plan and conduct comprehensive orientation for all new hires, ensuring they are competent in direct patient care tasks and facility policies before working with residents.

In-Service Education: Design and deliver mandatory annual in-service training (e.g., resident rights, infection control, safety) and maintain at least 24 hours of CNA in-service training annually.

Compliance & Records: Verify and maintain up-to-date records of all staff certifications, licenses, and background checks in accordance with Title 22 and federal regulations.

Clinical Competency: Perform regular clinical rounds to assess staff performance and provide immediate "mini in-services" or corrective training where deficiencies are identified.

Infection Control: Often serves as the facility’s Infection Preventionist, overseeing surveillance programs and hygiene protocols.

CNA Leadership: Manage the CNA selection process, oversee scheduling to ensure proper coverage, and process performance reviews or disciplinary actions.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds frequently.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
