About the Role
OC Solar is looking for a safety-minded, detail-driven Solar System Inspection Technician to inspect, commission, and verify residential solar and battery energy storage systems. You will help ensure each project is installed correctly, performs as expected, and is ready for a successful closeout. This role is ideal for a solar professional who enjoys technical fieldwork, troubleshooting, accurate documentation, and working independently across multiple customer sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect PV modules, racking, roof attachments, inverters, rapid-shutdown equipment, service equipment, monitoring hardware, and battery systems.
- Verify array placement, labeling, equipment clearances, weatherproofing, workmanship, and conformance with approved plans and manufacturer requirements.
- Review accessible wiring methods, terminations, grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, disconnects, and connectors for visible defects or safety concerns.
- Perform approved startup, commissioning, and functional checks; evaluate voltage, current, production, communications, monitoring, inverter operation, and battery status.
- Prepare clear, timely inspection reports with photographs, test results, findings, severity, and recommended corrective action.
- Troubleshoot faults using visual inspection, monitoring data, approved testing, and manufacturer procedures; perform minor corrective work only within your training and authorization.
- Explain system operation and next steps to homeowners in clear, professional language without making commitments outside your authority.
- Coordinate with installers, service technicians, project managers, permitting personnel, and AHJs to support first-pass quality and timely project completion.
- Identify and escalate electrical, structural, roofing, battery, fall, fire, heat, weather, and customer-property hazards; exercise stop-work authority when conditions are unsafe.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- At least one year of relevant experience in residential solar installation, solar service, electrical work, commissioning, construction quality control, or a closely related field; two or more years preferred.
- Working knowledge of residential PV system components and basic electrical principles; ability to read one-line diagrams, plan sets, equipment manuals, and inspection checklists.
- Must be well versed in AHJ Code requirements.
- Must be well versed in Tesla, Enphase, and Solar Edge Installation guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to use digital tools, mobile applications, email, photo documentation, and field-service or project-management systems accurately.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving standards, where driving is an essential function.
- Ability to communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, trade partners, and authorities having jurisdiction.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple sites, follow procedures, and make sound escalation decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience inspecting or commissioning residential PV and battery systems from multiple manufacturers.
- Familiarity with the California Electrical Code, utility interconnection requirements, and relevant building and fire-code concepts.
- A relevant NABCEP credential, OSHA 10 or 30 training, or documented fall-protection, ladder, electrical-safety, first-aid/CPR, or battery-safety training.
- California General Electrician certification or Electrician Trainee registration when applicable to the authorized work scope.
- Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills.
