The Staff Accountant performs office and non-manual work directly related to the Company’s financial and accounting operations. The position’s primary duty is to independently analyze accounting transactions, financial information, reconciliations, and internal-control matters; determine appropriate accounting treatment within established policies and accounting principles; and provide findings and recommendations to management and other departments. The position works under general supervision and customarily and regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment on significant accounting matters. The employee is expected to spend more than one-half of work time performing these analytical, judgment-based, specialized accounting duties and work directly related to them.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities — Primary Exempt Functions

· Independently analyze accounting transactions and determine appropriate accounting treatment, account classification, timing, and supporting documentation in accordance with Company policy and applicable accounting principles.

· Analyze general ledger accounts, financial results, and significant variances; identify unusual or incorrect transactions; determine the nature and cause of discrepancies; and recommend or implement appropriate corrections.

· Exercise independent judgment in researching and resolving complex balance-sheet, general-ledger, bank, credit-card, inventory, cost-accounting, and other account reconciliation issues.

· Perform key responsibilities in the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close, including evaluating the completeness and accuracy of account balances, accruals, journal entries, and supporting schedules.

· Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and management reports; identify significant trends, exceptions, and budget-to-actual variances and communicate findings to the VP of Finance, Controller, or other management personnel.

· Evaluate accounting processes and internal controls, identify control or process weaknesses, and recommend improvements to management.

· Provide accounting guidance to Sales, Service, Parts, Rental, and other departments regarding proper transaction classification, documentation, coding, cut-off, and accounting treatment.

· Independently research prior-period accounting discrepancies and other complex accounting issues and determine the appropriate resolution or escalate matters requiring management approval.

· Prepare schedules, analyses, and supporting documentation for external auditors, tax professionals, lenders, and other third parties; respond to inquiries within the scope of assigned responsibility.

· Analyze inventory and equipment-related accounting activity, including Toyota factory accounts, new-equipment loans, equipment transfers, and gain/loss activity, and resolve exceptions requiring accounting judgment.

· Assist management with special financial analyses, accounting projects, process improvements, and other assignments requiring specialized accounting knowledge and independent judgment.


Supporting Accounting Responsibilities

The following duties support the primary exempt functions and are expected to remain secondary to the analytical and judgment-based responsibilities described above:

· Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger, including payroll-related entries, based on independent review of supporting information.

· Maintain fixed-asset schedules and record depreciation; investigate and resolve unusual asset activity.

· Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed, including resolution of non-routine discrepancies and account issues.

· Assist with sales tax, property tax, and other regulatory filings and related account analyses.

· Maintain reconciliations of Toyota factory A/P accounts, including proper application of monthly payments and reconciliation of outstanding invoices; investigate and resolve exceptions.

· Process Toyota factory receivers and invoices for new loans with purchase orders in coordination with Sales Coordinators, including resolution of exceptions and discrepancies.

· Maintain the Equipment Transfer Log for inventory-control purposes and investigate transfer discrepancies.

· Process Ship-In Fee Credits based on Service Commission to Dealers and resolve discrepancies.

· Assist with preparation and review of details for the Gain/Loss on Sale of Revenue-Earning Equipment Report.

· Perform other duties and special assignments consistent with the level and nature of the position.


Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.


Education, Experience & Skills

· College-level coursework in Accounting or a related field; a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.

· Three to five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a retail sales, equipment, distribution, or similar business environment.

· Strong understanding of general accounting principles and practices and the ability to apply them to non-routine transactions and circumstances.

· Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in analyzing accounting issues, evaluating alternatives, and determining or recommending appropriate action.

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to research and resolve complex accounting discrepancies with limited supervision.

· Intermediate or advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to create, understand, troubleshoot, and analyze formulas and financial schedules.

· Ability to read, understand, and analyze accounting and financial reports and communicate conclusions clearly to management and other departments.

· Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently under general supervision.


Physical Requirements

· Ability to perform general office duties, including prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.

· Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.

· Ability to operate standard office equipment.

· Ability to lift and carry files, binders, and other office materials weighing up to 25 pounds.


This is a salaried exempt position with an annual salary of $72,000.
