Job Description

A privately held, established real estate investment and management company in San Mateo is seeking an experienced Senior Real Estate Counsel / General Counsel to provide strategic legal guidance to ownership and senior management.

This is a part-time position of approximately 10-20 hours per week with flexibility in scheduling. Onsite presence in our San Mateo office is preferred, although a hybrid arrangement due to workload may be considered for the right candidate.

Position Overview

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced real estate attorney with 20+ years of relevant legal experience who is interested in applying substantial industry knowledge in a flexible, hands-on environment. This individual will serve as a trusted legal advisor to ownership and senior management and will provide practical, business-oriented counsel across the company's real estate portfolio and operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise ownership & senior management on real estate & general business legal matters.
  • Review, draft and negotiate real estate agreements, leases, purchase and sale agreements, vendor contracts and other business agreements.
  • Provide legal guidance related to acquisitions, dispositions, financing, development and property operations.
  • Advise on landlord/tenant legal matters and other issues affecting the company's real estate portfolio.
  • Assist with entity, corporate governance and general business matters.
  • Identify and advise management regarding legal and operational risks.
  • Provide guidance regarding regulatory and compliance matters affecting real estate ownership and operations.
  • Manage and coordinate outside counsel when specialized expertise or litigation support is required.
  • Assist with dispute resolution and other legal matters as they arise.

Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of the California State Bar.
  • 20+ years of legal experience, with substantial experience in commercial and/or multifamily real estate.
  • Significant experience with real estate transactions, contracts, leasing and related legal matters.
  • Prior in-house counsel, General Counsel or senior real estate law experience strongly preferred.
  • Comfortable working directly with ownership & senior executives in a small-company environment.

Schedule: Part-time, approximately 10-20 hours per week

We offer flexibility in structuring the weekly schedule, but candidate flexibility is also required related to variable workload. Onsite availability in our San Mateo office is preferred, with the possibility of a hybrid arrangement based on experience and business needs.

Compensation:

Competitive compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This opportunity may be particularly attractive to a highly experienced attorney seeking a flexible, reduced-hours position while continuing to handle substantive and meaningful legal work.
