Shop-Floor Quality Operations Leader -- Automotive Machining

Job Description

Job Description Do you love coaching on the shop floor as much as mastering a surface plate?

Picture this: It’s 7:00 AM in Camarillo. You kick off with a quick stand-up, align priorities with two Inspectors, then head to Building 2 where a machinist flags a tricky GD&T callout. You interpret the print, select the right gauges, verify the feature, and coach through the best method—preventing rework before it starts. That blend of hands-on inspection, people development, and documentation is your sweet spot.

Where you’ll do it

Since 1967, our 60-person team across three buildings has produced precision components for a major automotive brand, running about 35 CNC machines. You’ll report to the Director of Manufacturing, support both first and second shift operations, and occasionally extend your day when demand spikes.

Your mission

  • Own the daily operation of the Quality function; guide two Inspectors today with a trajectory to four.
  • Split your impact thoughtfully:
    • ~20% inspecting parts and verifying results
    • ~50% coaching, mentoring, and frontline support
    • ~30% quality documentation, reporting, and admin
  • Execute dimensional inspections using micrometers, calipers, indicators, gauges, and surface plate techniques.
  • Translate prints and specifications into clear inspection strategies using robust GD&T application.
  • Be the technical ally for machinists—identify issues and guide them to conforming parts.
  • Coordinate quality activities across multiple buildings and teams.
  • Write/process NMRs and help lead corrective actions that stick.
  • Develop and maintain procedures that sustain ISO 9001 and AS9100 certifications.
  • Contribute to hiring, performance reviews, and team development initiatives.
  • Champion a collaborative, quality-first culture grounded in continuous improvement.

Must-haves

  • 3–5 years in quality inspection, quality supervision, machining, or manufacturing; or 10+ years machining with strong inspection experience.
  • Advanced blueprint literacy and technical drawing interpretation.
  • GD&T expertise.
  • Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, indicators, gauges, and surface plate inspection.
  • Skill in selecting proper inspection methods and metrology tools per feature.
  • Working knowledge of QMS, including ISO 9001 and AS9100.
  • Clear communicator and effective mentor who collaborates well across teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • CMM experience.
  • Previous leadership of quality personnel in manufacturing.
  • Experience in aerospace or precision manufacturing environments.

What kind of leader succeeds here?

A technically strong quality pro who’s as comfortable teaching as they are measuring; approachable, solution-oriented, and devoted to accountability and continuous improvement.

Compensation

Expected California range: $30–$40 per hour, with final pay determined by experience and other factors permitted by law.

AMC is an Equal Opportunity employer.
