Job Description

Position Summary

The AOI Programmer & Operator is a hybrid technical role responsible for programming, optimizing, maintaining, and operating AOI and inspection systems in a high-mix, low-volume PCBA manufacturing environment. This role bridges production and engineering by ensuring inspection programs are robust, efficient, and aligned with IPC standards while supporting production throughput, quality, and continuous improvement objectives.

Key Responsibilities

AOI Programming & Engineering Duties

• Create, debug, optimize, and maintain AOI inspection programs for new and existing PCB assemblies.

• Write AOI programs using platform-specific software (Koh Young).

• Fine-tune inspection parameters to minimize false calls while maintaining defect detection sensitivity.

• Support NPI builds by creating inspection programs from CAD, Gerber, BOM, assembly drawings, and customer documentation.

• Maintain and update inspection libraries, component databases, golden boards, and revision-controlled programs.

• Document program logic, revisions, and releases per document control and quality system requirements.

• Inform Engineering or Management of potential quality or inspection issues prior to production release.

AOI Operation & Production Support

• Set up, operate, and monitor AOI equipment to inspect production PCBs per released programs and work instructions.

• Review, classify, and disposition inspection results, escalating true defects per quality procedures.

• Verify defect calls and coordinate rework or repair activities as required.

• Perform first article inspections and in-process verification as scheduled.

• Support production flow by prioritizing inspection queues and communicating issues affecting throughput.

• Perform basic machine setup, changeover, calibration checks, and preventive maintenance.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

Quality, Compliance & Documentation

• Ensure inspections comply with IPC-A-610, customer, and internal quality requirements.

• Follow ESD, safety, ITAR, handling, and storage procedures at all times.

• Accurately document inspection results, defect data, and corrective actions in MES or quality systems.

• Participate in root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement activities.

Training & Cross-Functional Support

• Assist in training AOI operators and technicians on inspection equipment and quality standards.

• Act as a technical resource for Production, Quality, and Engineering teams.

• Support internal and customer audits by providing inspection data, documentation, and technical explanations.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

• 2–3+ years of experience operating and programming AOI inspection systems in a PCBA environment.

• Hands-on experience writing and debugging AOI inspection programs.

• Working knowledge of IPC-A-610 standards (Class 2 and/or Class 3 preferred).

• Ability to read and interpret assembly drawings, schematics, BOMs, and technical work instructions.

• Strong attention to detail with sound judgment in defect classification.

• Good written and verbal communication skills.

• Proficiency with computers and ability to learn new software systems (e.g., MES, PCB inspection software).

• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while reviewing inspection images.

• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

• Manual dexterity to handle printed circuit boards and small components.

• Ability to work flexible hours or shifts as required by production schedules.
