Job Description:

PATIENT POPULATION:

The patient population served is all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Department Leadership, the Director of Surgical Services is responsible for the overall operational and financial management of assigned departments. The service lines includes: Surgery, Flex/Pre-op, Surgical Suites, PACU, ASD-Endoscopy Suite, Cardiac Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, and Central Sterile Supply.

The participant integrates their department’s services with the Hospital’s primary functions and overall plan for care delivery and other departments. The participant develops and reviews annually house-wide and unit specific policies and where appropriate, coordinate policies with other primary functions and/or departments. The participant achieves and documents desired staffing to patient ratios within targeted goals. The participant determines the qualifications and competence of department personnel who provide Patient Care Services and who are not licensed independent practitioners. The participant is involved directly and/or supports subordinate participation in the Performance and Improvement process as measured by active participation in Quality activities recommends capital equipment and physical space and resources appropriate to patient care needs and selects, orients, evaluates performance and competency of outside contractors and vendor services. In departments with 24/7 operations, the Leader will assume full responsibility, authority and accountability 24-hour, seven days a week to ensure that the department and all individuals in the department meet the mission and service expectations related to delivering appropriate patient care.

Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

A bachelor’s degree in nursing is required.

MSN is preferred.

Must have a minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in specialty area.

Must be a member of at least one (1) Professional Nursing Organization.

Must have knowledge of regulatory requirements for The Joint Commission or other regulatory agencies.

Proficient in reading and interpreting various documents, including safety guidelines, operational procedures, maintenance instructions, and manuals. Capable of preparing routine reports and correspondence as needed. Ability to speak and write in English, with the ability to write clearly, comprehend verbal and written instructions, and follow directions accurately.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have and maintain current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.

CNOR certification is highly desired.

A national certification will be identified within 90 days from hire, and the incumbent will have 21 months from hire date to complete the certification.

Must have and maintain current American Heart Association BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for managing and documenting employee performance, conducting investigations when necessary, and engaging in crucial conversations to address performance, conduct, or workplace concerns. Accountable for ensuring consistency, and timely application of organizational standards and policies. Performing these duties with professionalism, confidentiality, and integrity.
  • Regular, punctual attendance and physical presence at the assigned work location and workstation, ready to perform job duties at the scheduled start time.
  • Is responsible for the planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and documenting of patient care activities ensuring that all patients are cared for with compassion, empathy, and respect, utilizing the Nursing Process Model.
  • Actively participates in achieving and maintaining department compliance with all state, federal and third-party regulatory agency standards. Is accountable for maintaining your department at “Survey Ready” status at all times.
  • Is responsible for ensuring that the individuals in the departments who are responsible for the assessment, treatment, and care of patients are competent to deliver care appropriate to the ages of patients served. Ensures that these individuals demonstrate the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs.
  • Serves as a professional and clinical role model, to include maintaining current knowledge and basic clinical skills in the patient care areas of practice, demonstrating knowledge and support of hospital and department specific policies, procedures, and standards of care in the clinical setting.
  • Demonstrates continuous improvement in measures specific to your department that benchmark the Organization’s performance against national standards and result in maximum reimbursement to the Organization.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with other directors and leaders across the organization to carry out strategic and tactical planning and operations.
  • Ensures compliance with professional and regulatory standards in all assigned departments and service areas.
  • Acts as a liaison, coordinator, collaborator, and communicator between the medical, nursing and administrative staff.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides leadership for a safe working environment which eliminates and minimizes Workers Compensation injuries, and their expense as measured by Risk Management and Health and Safety Committee reports.
  • Other units/departments may be assigned from time to time by the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Supports the Hospital’s mission, vision and values.
