Job Description Controller
North Shore Greenhouses, LLC
Thermal / Palm Desert, California | Accounting | Reports to CFO
Full-time, regular, exempt | Greenhouse and hydroponic agriculture
About us
We are a family-owned, year-round greenhouse operation in California’s Coachella Valley, growing fresh herbs for national retailers and major chain stores. We rely on accurate financial controls, useful reporting, and collaborative leadership to support profitable production and dependable customer service.
The opportunity
We are seeking a hands-on Controller to lead our Accounting Department and partner with the CFO. This role will own the financial use and continued development of our new NetSuite ERP, oversee payroll accounting in ADP Workforce Now, and build a reliable costing and WIP inventory process in NetSuite.
You will work closely with our growing and production teams to capture crop quantities and costs through sowing, propagation, growing, and packing. Your work will help us understand inventory value, shrink, cost per plant, and product margins while delivering timely financial statements and strong day-to-day controls.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and develop the accounting team, maintain documented procedures and internal controls, and provide backup coverage for critical accounting functions.
- Own NetSuite accounting, inventory valuation, and costing processes. Work with implementation partners and department leaders on workflows, master data, approvals, testing, training, and ongoing improvements.
- Build and maintain WIP inventory in NetSuite, including unharvested crops, production-stage cost accumulation, inventory transfers, and reconciliation to production records and the general ledger.
- Develop crop and product costing using materials, labor, and production overhead and explain margin and cost variances.
- Own month-end close and financial reporting, targeting completion by the fifth business day. Review reconciliations, journal entries, inventory, COGS, and supporting schedules.
- Lead budgets, cash forecasting, and operational analysis. Support pricing, customer and freight profitability, capital investments, and ROI decisions with clear financial recommendations.
- Oversee biweekly payroll review and labor-cost reporting in ADP Workforce Now. Partner with HR on payroll taxes, deductions, benefits, and recordkeeping.
- Coordinate tax and agency reporting, outside-accountant support, insurance reviews, and financial risk controls. Work effectively with executives, department heads, and external service providers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent business experience.
- Five or more years of relevant accounting, controller, or finance-management experience preferred, with demonstrated responsibility for financial reporting, close, budgeting, internal controls, and accounting staff.
- Strong inventory accounting, production costing, and WIP experience, with the ability to translate production activity into accurate inventory valuation and COGS.
- NetSuite implementation, administration, or financial-process ownership experience strongly preferred. Ability to define requirements, test workflows, improve reporting, and train users.
- ADP Workforce Now experience strongly preferred, including payroll review, GL reconciliation, and labor reporting.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and lookup functions. Experience in agriculture, food production, manufacturing, or multi-entity environments is helpful.
- Strong communication, attention to detail, and project-management skills. Ability to mentor staff, set priorities, work independently, and stay calm under deadline pressure.
What we offer
- Competitive compensation based on experience.
- Health, dental, and vision benefits, plus 401(k) and benefit programs.
- Opportunities for professional growth and leadership across departments.
- A supportive, collaborative, family-owned work environment and the opportunity to improve the financial performance of a working herb farm.
Schedule
This is a full-time, exempt position. Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Evening or weekend work may be required to meet business needs and deadlines, with travel to company locations as needed.
