Moderator / User Study Specialist
San Diego, CA (Onsite)
About the Role
We are seeking detail-oriented and professional Moderators / User Study Specialists to support a high-profile technology user research program in San Diego, CA. In this role, you will guide participants through structured study sessions, collect observational and measurement data, operate research equipment, and ensure a seamless participant experience while supporting innovative product development initiatives.
This position is ideal for individuals with experience in user research, data collection (sensor based), consumer electronics testing, video engineering data collection, laboratory operations, human factors studies, or participant-facing technical environments.
Key Responsibilities
Lead Participant Study Sessions
• Welcome and guide participants through the research process.
• Deliver scripted instructions and study protocols.
• Ensure participant comfort while maintaining protocol compliance.
• Monitor study activities and document observations.
Collect and Record Research Data
• Capture participant measurements (anthropometric) and study-related information accurately.
• Enter data into designated research systems.
• Verify completeness and accuracy of collected information.
Operate Research Equipment
• Prepare, operate, and reset study equipment between sessions.
• Support sensor-based and device interaction data collection activities.
• Monitor equipment functionality throughout sessions.
Support Daily Study Operations
• Maintain organized study stations and equipment inventory.
• Follow security and confidentiality procedures.
• Assist with participant scheduling, session tracking, and operational reporting.
Troubleshoot Basic Technical Issues
• Perform basic troubleshooting of hardware, software, and data collection equipment.
• Escalate complex technical issues to site leadership as required.
Skill Requirements
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2+ years of experience in customer-facing, research, laboratory, technical support, or operational environments.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills.
• Ability to follow detailed procedures and protocols consistently.
• Basic computer proficiency and comfort learning new software tools.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information.
• Ability to work onsite in San Diego for the duration of the project.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience supporting user studies, usability testing, research operations, or data collection programs.
• Experience with anthropometric measurements or participant assessments.
• Experience in consumer electronics testing, hardware validation, video engineering data collection, motion capture, sensor-based studies, or human factors research environments.
• Familiarity with macOS, iOS, or technical device troubleshooting.
• Experience handling research equipment or prototype hardware.
Other Requirements 1. Data Intake: Receive validated datasets from collection teams, Check required metadata and file structure, Log intake status 2. Workflow Processing: Move data through defined processing workflows, Apply naming and folder conventions, Support technical submissions 3. Bottleneck Diagnosis: Monitor queues and processing delays, Identify stuck submissions, Escalate technical blockers
• Knowledge of data workflow management, file processing, queue monitoring, issue coordination, and technical submission support.
• Strong process orientation, analytical thinking, and data handling capabilities.
• Experience with Excel, data repositories, ticketing systems, and basic scripting or ETL processes is advantageous.

A candidate’s pay within the range will depend on their work location, skills, experience, education, and other factors permitted by law. This role may also be eligible for performance-based bonuses subject to company policies. In addition, this role is eligible for the following benefits subject to company policies: medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, life, accidental death & dismemberment, and disability insurance; employee assistance program; 401(k) retirement plan; 10 days of paid time off per year (some positions are eligible for need-based leave with no designated number of leave days per year); and 10 paid holidays per year.
Pay and Benefits Pay Range Minimum: $60,000 annually
Pay Range Maximum: $65,000 annually
