Job Description
The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for construction projects. This position reviews project plans, specifications, and scope of work to determine labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor, and other project costs. The Estimator works closely with project managers, subcontractors, vendors, and clients to develop bids and support successful project proposals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review construction plans, specifications, drawings, and project requirements.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Prepare accurate and competitive estimates, bids, and proposals.
- Obtain and evaluate pricing from suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Analyze labor and material costs to determine overall project costs.
- Identify potential cost-saving opportunities and areas of risk.
- Prepare bid summaries and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and other team members regarding project scope and pricing.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs as needed.
- Clarify scope, specifications, and discrepancies with architects, engineers, owners, and subcontractors.
- Maintain organized records of estimates, bids, proposals, and pricing information.
- Assist with change order pricing and cost analysis during projects.
- Monitor market conditions and maintain current knowledge of material and labor costs.
- Ensure estimates are completed accurately and within established deadlines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in construction estimating required.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, labor requirements, and industry practices.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, specifications, and contracts.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with estimating or construction management software preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Degree or certification in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred.
- Typically 2+ years of construction estimating experience preferred, depending on project complexity.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to visit active construction sites as needed.
- May occasionally be required to walk, climb stairs, or navigate uneven construction-site conditions.
- Ability to safely wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) during site visits.
Work Environment
This position primarily works in an office environment but may require travel to construction sites, client locations, pre-bid meetings, and project walkthroughs. Occasional work outside normal business hours may be required to meet bid deadlines.
