Looking for an opportunity where your accounting expertise directly supports a meaningful mission? We're partnering with a respected nonprofit organization dedicated to improving children's mental and behavioral health services. This hands-on Controller role offers the chance to lead the accounting function during a key period of organizational growth and transition while partnering closely with executive leadership.

This is an ideal opportunity for a collaborative, roll-up-your-sleeves accounting leader who enjoys balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day accounting operations.

What You'll Do

  • Lead month-end close and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting
  • Maintain and manage a rolling 13-week cash forecast
  • Oversee cash management, liquidity planning, and balance sheet activities
  • Prepare and review financial statements and board reporting packages
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and grant requirements
  • Oversee accounting activities related to government contracts, grants, and restricted funding
  • Support annual audits and financial reporting requirements
  • Partner with leadership during the CFO transition and provide accounting stability across the organization
  • Mentor and support the Accounting Manager, Staff Accountant, and Accounting Clerk
  • Evaluate and improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting procedures
  • Support future ERP evaluation and system enhancement initiatives

What We're Looking For

✅ Bachelor's degree required

✅ 5-7+ years of Controller-level or equivalent accounting leadership experience

✅ Strong nonprofit accounting experience

✅ Expertise with:

  • Government grants and contracts
  • Restricted funding
  • Revenue recognition
  • Federal award reporting
  • CFR compliance

✅ Experience owning:

  • Month-end close
  • Financial reporting
  • Cash management
  • Financial statement preparation
  • Audit support

✅ Advanced Excel skills including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, XLOOKUPs, and financial analysis

✅ Experience leading accounting functions for organizations in the $20M-$50M+ revenue range

✅ Strong technical accounting, leadership, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

⭐ Government contract accounting experience

⭐ Dynamics GP (Great Plains), Sage, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar ERP experience

⭐ Experience supporting ERP implementations or system upgrades

⭐ Background working in lean, collaborative accounting environments

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of San Diego, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $75.00 - $80.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
